Wailua Beach

A large, wind-swept beach with the river mouth of the Wailua river feeding into it. Surfers frequently flock here to enjoy the wind-swells. The often murky waters here offer limited activities for the novice as well as limited parking. Roadside parking. No facilities.
Things To Do
- Sunrise viewing
- Swimming
- Surfing
- Bodyboarding
- Sailing
- Fishing
- Paddling
- Beach walks
- Family days
Cool Because
Wailua is easy to access and centrally located.

There's a great river that poors out into the ocean at this beach. The river actually has more activities, including kayaking and waterskiing.
There are some good surf spots around here too, but not for learning.

I like to stop off at Wailua and eat my plate lunch from Blossoming Lotus. Sometimes the surf at the rivermouth is incredible and the area is generally uncrowded. Most of the time the trade winds make for choppy seas and the Wailua River (with water from Waialeale) makes the water murky. "If da water stay Murcury - no go out!!!"

I have a question that I would like addressed to prove a point. Last week, while vacationing at the Islander on the Beach, my drunk husband wished to go night swimming off the beach right in front of the hotel. I told him that was not a good idea and literally fought him to stay on dry land. Could you please post an honest & detailed commentary of what a drunk grown man (even a good swimmer) could expect if he chose to swim off of the beach directly off the shore of this hotel at night? Thank you!

@ Annonymous: Experienced surfers know that drinking and swimming don't mix. The lack of coordination makes it hard to catch da waves, bra!
Next time, just tell your husband that sharks feed at night.

your husband must be a fool. that or he wants to be shark bait

@ Anonymous: Anyone considering this should call the paramedics first to be sure they'll be available for the rescue. Then just don't do it. Period. It may be the last foolish thing you ever do.

@ Respondent & the World: Night diving in this area is common. BTW sharks know about you the second you step in the water. If you dont have a bloody nose or on your period, no worry bra/sista, lobsterzzzzzz. My favorite beach.

I just read the last comment about sharks and period situation which worried me. Not to be too graphic but I will be on Kauai this week and also will be on my period. Does it seriously pose a threat or was that just a joke?

Tough questions Anonymous - whenever I get a cut that is actively bleeding I get out of the water (primarily to prevent infection). Sharks are out there but I am not sure if they will be attracted by a small amount of blood. You will be OK in nearshore waters but I would not swim way out to sea in murky water around sunset.

I just returned from my 2nd visit to Kauai. My wife and I were just playing in the waves at this beach being careful not to get too far out because the waves were pretty violent and frequent. But in what seemed like a split second we both got caught in a rip tide. We tried not to panic and just swim parallel until we could get back in - but neither of us were strong enough to get back. After several minutes of trying my wife finally broke through and made it back in. I, on the other hand, was getting swept further out and began to take in a lot of water as I couldn't stay above water. I was completely exhausted when I finally went under for what I thought was for good. There wasn't really anyone else on the beach, but somehow a local surfer saw me and got there just in the nick of time to save me. By far this was the most traumatic incident of our lives. There is a lifegaurd tower, but it was unoccupied on a Monday morning. The water is beautiful, but if there is any advice I can give - stay away from this beach if you don't know what you are getting into! I'm 28 yrs old and fairly athletic - but this water was way too strong for me. I tried to thank the surfer, I would have given him anything - but he was gone before I could regain much consciousness. I just laid on the beach with my wife throwing up for about a half hour before going home. I have a newfound respect for the power of the ocean - but I still love Kauai!

My husband and I will be going to Kauai in May of 08\' and are planning our activities now. My husband is a die hard fly-fisherman, can he just cast from the beach or do we need permits? Can you recommend any good fishing spots? Thanks for any information.

Hello Tracie - you do not need a fishing permit. During my younger years I was really into shoreline fishing and would like to offer a few tips:
1)Use a fast retrieve - you'll get more strikes from game species and not all of the unwanted reef fish. Something that splashes is good.
2) If you do not get any strikes in the first few casts, move. If you do not get any strikes after moving to a couple of spots, the bite is not on.
3) High tide and agitated water is good.
4) Watch out for sharp reef, waves, and currents when wading.

I've been to Maui a few years ago. We never thought about or even considered rip currents the whole time we went snorkeling. Now I read all about rip currents and how to spot them in Kauai. Are the conditions that much different in Kauai and Maui?
We are going to Kauai May 23 - June 1 2008. What will the conditions be at that time? We want to go snorkeling, but I must admit I'm a little worried after reading too much information about strong rip currents on the beaches in Kauai. Do you have any words of encouragement?

Aloha Dave. Your dates fall within a time that the North shore usually sees calmer ocean conditions with smaller waves. Still be cautious and check with a lifeguard. Haena Beach Park is a well known snorkel area with a lifeguard tower. Ignorance can be dangerous. Now that you're educated, you're much better off. Enjoy the beach! J

rip currents?!!!! Dave posted about how he has learned to spot them back on 3-26-08!
Could somebody advise me about how to do this?
Did he view this on this web site or somewhere else? I have been body surfing for a long, long time- off the Jersey Shore true- but I have never known how you can spot a rip current until you get swept up in one.
Thanks!

My friend has a house close to this beach so it is a go to beach for a quick cool off. I like it there because it is so sandy but I really respect it.We take the car, check out the conditions carefully and go to Lydgate Park if it seems too rough. Really watch for rip tides around the mouth of the river (there is a great area for children in the river) and watch your back when getting out. My friend didn't know about diving/ducking under the big waves and was badly tossed. Also I go in where there are other people sitting on the beach just in case but it is a really quiet beach which I love.

I'm traveling to Kauai in late May and have two 20 somethings that want to surf and snorkel (no experience). What is the best starting point for each and where would they want to go once they have some lessons?
Where is the best kayaing for someone with decent experience, but not interested in more than 2-3 hours of paddling?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 31, 2009 11:09PM
Hi Patsy - you'll probably want to set the 20-somethings up for snorkeling at Koloa Landing or Haena (depending on where is calmest that day). There might still be some surf in Hanalei Bay in late May. Na Pali is the ultimate Kauai kayaking experience but is at least an all-day adventure. You can kayak up Wailua River, Hanalei River or in Hanalei Bay. W

I am leaving for Kauai in 7 days on the 29th of April. I was there last year, but our rental home was too far from the beach to walk to at night. This year we are a half a block from Wailua Beach and I am curious to know if a safe, controlled beach campfire is allowed. And if not on this beach....which beaches allow fires? I can't seem to find the answer in my internet searches.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 24, 2009 5:37PM
Hi Jenna - as far as we know there are no laws against beach fires unless they are causing a hazard. We have had many beach fires, but we make sure nobody is downwind and to clean up our mess. W

Hello,
What a informative and helful site you have going here. Keep up the good work!We are planning a family vacation the last two weeks of July. We found a great deal on a house in Kekaha. We have our 19 year old and 16 year old going with us. Is the water unsafe at this time of year? Thanks....

Hey Charlie - we don't issue high surf advisories, the National Weather Service does that. W

curious whether ANY jet skiing is available on Kaui, I read in Frommers that on the river near Wailua beach it was permitted. I understand why its not popular and in my own way agree but I am checking for my husband. Does anyone know
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 22, 2009 7:00PM
Hi Midge - nobody rents Jet-skiis on Kauai. You are right that it is a sensitive activity. Most people around here don't like jet-skiis.

we are planning a trip to kauai and maui in mid dec through early jan. never been to kauai but have been to maui and oahu. are there more shark sightings etc in kauai than the other places. also have 2 kids 11 and 14 who love to snorkel. that was the big plans for kauai to visit the beaches wilderness etc and for adults to relax while kids snorkled. reading a lot of these comments i'm a bit worried now about these arrangements. what advice can you give?

My wife will be travelling to Kauai in early July. Do you have any suggestions about a good beach (or side of the island) to surf from in July? She is a beginning surfer so is not looking for huge waves, but rather gentle rollers with a long ride (she tried surfing at Waikiki and loved it). I saw from your website that the waves are calm on the North side in July and very high on the South side. Does that mean the East or West side would be best? Thanks so much for your help. This is a great site!!

Mar 07, 2010 7:11PM
Hi Keith - Waikiki is probably one of the best places to learn - and advance - in the world. On Kauai you can try Hanalei Bay or Kalapaki for similar rolling waves. It all depends on the constantly changing conditions so be sure to check our Ocean Report.

We are going to Kauai on the 23rd of July. Staying at Grand Hyatt. Can you tell me the best places to go for an experienced body boarder and beginner surfer?
Aug 18, 2011 9:55AM
I am a photographer and the beach I was at, which was on the east side and I believe it was Wailua had lava formations that had run into the shoreline and the water. The sand was covered by stone in beautiful formations. I see no one mentions this and I am beginning to wonder it this is not the beach where I saw this. Any idea?
Feb 16, 2012 12:01AM
Are controlled...we are grown ups...beach fires allowed at anahola? We are staying at a cottage and of course will follow local laws/customs...we come from northern cali and love small fire and know how to make it safe for the next day...

Hi wondering what beach will be the safest to swim at in February ??

Jackie - conditions always change so it's impossible to predict what beach will be safe 6 months from now. Check our daily ocean report for updates.
