Makua Beach (Tunnels)
A.K.A. Ha‘ena Beach Park, Tunnels • Photo by Wasabi

Makua is known for its incredible mountain scenery featured in the movie, "South Pacific." A great snorkeling beach, Tunnels has something for everyone. The shallow inner reef is great for the novice and children, while the outer reefs are exhilarating for the more advanced divers and snorkelers. Tunnels gets its name from the surfers who have seen the tube and divers who have found the caverns. Public parking, bathrooms and showers at Haena Beach Park located west of Tunnels.

Things To Do
- Swimming
- Snorkeling
- Surfing
- Shell searching
- Paddling
- Beach walks
- Family days
- Camping
Cool Because
On calm days this is some of the best snorkeling on Kauai.
Hazards
Strong currents. Dangerous waves breaking on rocks, ledges and reefs. Sharp coral.
Topography
Mostly sandy shoreline. Mixed reef and sand underwater.
Not Good For
Learning to surf or bodyboard. While the reefs at Tunnels create perfectly formed waves (usually during the winter), the shallow and sharp reefs also present extreme hazards to even the most experienced surfers.

Isn't this also the same place where that girl got her arm bit off by a Tiger Shark?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 23, 2006 4:11PM
Aloha Dawson - Yes, this is where Bethany Hamilton lost her arm to the shark attack. She was about 1/4 mile from shore at the time. And yes, there are sharks in all Hawaiian waters. Statistically you are more likely to get injured in a car accident. As far as safety goes I would be more concerned with ocean conditions.
Nov 03, 2006 11:18AM
I lived in Kauai for a few months and Tunnels is probably the BEST snorkeling and diving I've ever experienced!
I truly do miss it there!
Nov 04, 2006 10:13AM
Snorkeler's heaven. Beautiful beach with huge reef. There is a normally weak, but often present lateral rip current to pay attention to. Just make sure you pop your head up from time to time to check where you are.
Lifeguarded~ but still check for ocean conditions.
I have been here many times, and no shark sightings yet.
Nov 09, 2006 6:53PM
I am going to be visiting for the first time at the end of November. Am I going to be able to snorkel or even swim at Tunnels at this time, or will it be too dangerous?
Nov 11, 2006 9:00AM
I agree with you guys; the best snorkelling that I've ever done. I did see a shark there, but it was only a 5-6 foot white-tip (luckily, not a tiger!), which took off as soon as I saw it. There were also many sea turtles as soon as we got beyond the shallow part of the reef. Just amazing!
Nov 15, 2006 4:33PM
I'm wondering what conditions are normally like in April? We were hoping for it to be pretty mellow, as we have a one year old, but also love to snorket and dive.
Most info talks about summer or winter not the transition months.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 17, 2006 3:17PM
Please see seasonal surf trends for a graph that shows average wave height by month.
@ Monica: Generally during November, swells are larger on the North shore where Tunnels is located. This doesn't mean that there won't be calm days perfect for snorkeling.
@ Lori: north swells will be declining and south swells will be on the rise in April. However, on any given day, the ocean conditions can be different for the norm on that given month.
So, the lesson here is to be aware of current ocean conditions. Check the Ocean Report or consult a lifeguard before entering the water that day.

what do you recommend for parking?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 13, 2006 10:26AM
@ Lenore: We would recommend writing a Hawaii Congressman and the Kauai Visitors Bureau and tell them there's no parking!
Dec 28, 2006 7:14PM
We will be visting in June and have never been to this island. What part of the island offers the most comperable beaches to Waimea Bay on Oahu during the same time of the year? Thanks.
Jan 15, 2007 9:32AM
We will be visiting your great state and MAKUA on Kauai in late Oct. of 2007. Do you keep % of days for that time of year that are good for snorkeling due to ocean conditions in late Oct. at Makua. Also are there many shark spottings inside the reef? This is our 3rd trip to Kauai but first in late Oct. Thanks Fred
Jan 17, 2007 12:16PM
Tunnels offers some of the best snorkeling on Kauai. In the summer the conditions were perfect! Winter is a different matter. Pay attention to surf conditions. Parking is horrible - a couple of turnouts alond the road that fill up early. Haena Beach park is nearby - but it's a hike back to tunnels - especially if you're hauling ice chests, snorkel stuff, kids stuff .... Our favorite snorkeling beach.
Jan 17, 2007 9:42PM
Great snorkeling at Tunnel's! I also saw a 5-6 ft. white-tip reef shark there last summer (2006). Sand gets very hot in the summer and there's very little parking available.
Jan 28, 2007 11:36PM
Just spent the last week hanging on Tunnels...It was amazing as usual. Cannot wait to get back. Waves were a bit big but this is the early part of the year....
I will be back soon!!!!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 30, 2007 12:40PM
@ Jennifer: Well, you picked the right beach. Haena Beach Park / Makua is probably the most similar. It's just even more beautiful. Have a great time!
@ Fred Barrow: We do not keep track of percentage of days. However, I can say that late October is the beginning of the North Shore surf season. So you could get some really nice snorkeling days as the swells are not generally as consistent at that point. But you should always check the Ocean Report on this website for daily ocean conditions for your safety.
Feb 10, 2007 10:54AM
I love Tunnels beach because it is soo beautiful AND mostly because my boyfriend proposed to me there!! We are going back to Kauai in march for our honeymoon, it is my favorite place in the world! Would you recommend staying in Hanalei or Poipu area for better weather in the mid March?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 12, 2007 11:55AM
@ Courtney: It depends on what kind of weather you are looking for. If you want it sunny and warm, Poipu will be a better choice for mid March. But Hanalei will be lusher, cooler and sunny most of the time. But chance of rain is really good!
Mar 06, 2007 7:34AM
We are planning on making our 4th trip to northern kauai in feb/march 2008. Will snorkeling be an option then?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 07, 2007 8:51AM
@ Sean: As you can see in the seasonal surf trends, surf is on the decline on the North Shore in February and even more so in March. There could be some good snorkeling days, but there will be some good surf days too. Check for current ocean conditions to help make your decision while you're here.

planing a trip to Hanalei Bay on May 1st. we were wanting to surf and snorkel. will there be waves to surf then?
Mar 07, 2007 12:48PM
I wanted to verify that this beach has a lifeguard. Where is the lifeguard station located?
We'll be traveling to Kauai in September. Will snorkeling be OK then?
Thanks much!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 08, 2007 2:05PM
@ Linda: In May, the surf will generally be smaller and better for snorkeling on the North Shore, but it's all dependent on the current ocean conditions for that day. If you are looking for waves during this time check out a beach on the South Side.
@ Lynn: Makua does have a lifeguard. The station is located a ways down from Tunnels at the beach park. September is when the North Shore's surf season begins. But there should be good snorkeling on days when the surf is not large. Check out the current ocean conditions on this website or ask the lifeguard.
Mar 09, 2007 6:13AM
My son, wife & baby are planning a trip in mid-July. They would like to rent a house on or near the beach. How rainy is the north shore then? How are Anini or Tunnels areas for reasonable rentals?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 09, 2007 1:48PM
@ Nancy: July is our summer and it's generally sunny on the North Shore during this time. Sorry, we don't answer questions about rentals here.
Mar 27, 2007 5:21PM
I'll be making my first trip to Kauai this April (9 - 16) staying in Princeville. I want to experience so much. For starters what beach is best for a warm sunny lounge? what about a novice snorkeler? and ATV adventures?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 28, 2007 10:47AM
@ Bon: You've picked a gorgeous beach for lounging here. But there will be so many great beaches on the North Shore during April, it will be hard to choose. The consistency of surf swells on the North Shore should be subsiding during your stay, but there could be some swells during this time, so check with a lifeguard or our daily ocean report. A good place for beginner snorkeling will be just down the way at Ke'e beach. However, Tunnels will be less crowded and offer great snorkeling as well.

Apr 02, 2007 2:28PM
I am faced with a seemingly chronic problem: where to go and what to do in only 5 days! I have 2-3 days free for beach activities, I am a novice snorkeler and my girlfriend has never snorkeled. The trip is for the dates of April 10th to 15th and at it seems like Tunnels is a must-do. I'm thinking of starting out with Poipu (where we are staying) and Lydgate to "practice" and work our way to Tunnels and Ke'e if conditions permit. Can you validate this for me or offer any advice? Thanks!
Apr 03, 2007 7:37AM
I will be in The Princeville area April 9-16. What are water temps like in the north compared to the south Poipu? Great website!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 04, 2007 11:00AM
@ Charlie Prokop: Water temperatures vary only slightly from one part of the island to the other. Temps in April should be between 74 and 78 degrees.
@ Tim F.: Sounds like you have a great plan. Just be sure to check for current ocean conditions for that day. It may be that tunnels is better for snorkeling then Poipu and vice-versa.
Apr 08, 2007 6:47AM
HI..we are planning to go to Kauai in June. What would be the ocean condition at tunnel beach during that time?
Justin
Apr 09, 2007 11:18AM
@ Swezin: During the summer, surf at this beach is generally small and good for snorkeling.
Apr 12, 2007 4:04PM
I will be visiting Kauai for the first time e in mid-May'07. Where (area) is best to stay this time of year? Is this a good season for snorkeling at this beach?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 13, 2007 9:23AM
@ Bill: While we don't answer questions about accommodations, I can say that there should be some good snorkeling and swimming at this beach in May. However, it will all be dependent on current ocean conditions for that day. Check out daily ocean report or with a lifeguard.
Apr 16, 2007 4:47AM
We are hoping to bring the family (our kids are ages 9 and 12) to Kauai for the first time from December 25-January 8th. Our favorite things to do are snorkeling and boogie boarding. Initially I was thinking about spending one week on the North Shore and one week on the South Shore. However, I've been reading about the rough water conditions in the North that time of year. I would hate to spend a week on the North Shore and not be able to go in the water at all. Would we be better off just staying in the South the whole time? I just want to make sure that there are enough beaches to explore/things to do for two weeks without having to spend a lot of time driving. Thanks!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 18, 2007 9:40AM
@ Kristin: During December and January, If you want to do both boogie boarding and snorkeling, then you will want to spend at least a few days on the North Shore to catch some waves. The waves can be big on the North Shore during these months, but there should be some beginner surfing zones in Hanalei Bay near the pier. The South Shore will generally have better snorkeling at the time of your vacation.

Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 23, 2007 3:43PM
@Angela: Legally, dogs are not allowed on any beach without a leash.

We will be staying on Kepuhi beach east of Tunnels in June.....I rarely see this beach mentioned. Where are the better spots to snorkel here along Kepuhi? Or is it better to keep walking to Tunnels? Thanks..
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 01, 2007 11:17AM
@John and Jean: Tunnels is the best place to snorkel in the area. The walk can be a distance if you do it in the soft sand from Kepuhi. Maybe a bike ride or walking the dirt road would be a better idea. Parking is horrible, so don't drive!
May 10, 2007 5:48AM
Can you rent snorkel gear at Tunnels Beach? And if not, where is the cheapest, closest place to do so?
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 14, 2007 12:32PM
@ Sarah: You cannot rent gear at Tunnels. However, there are several companies located nearby in Hanalei.

Tunnels was the best place we went to snokel. We had heard about this beach the whole week we had been in Kauai, but unfortunately waited till the last day to go and explore. I wish we had gone earlier, we would have been there every day!

My fiance and I plan to honeymoon in Hawaii in September or October 2007 and are having a hard time picking an island. We've both been to Oahu and loved Waikiki beach and are looking for something similar but less crowded / touristy. Any suggestions for Kauai?
Jun 15, 2007 1:41PM
We will be in Kauai at the end of July. We are having a difficult time deciding on whether to snorkel on the North Side (Haena Beach Park & Kee Beach) or South Side (Poipu Beach). What would you recommend? How long of a drive are the beaches on the North Side of Kauaui from Lihue?
Jun 16, 2007 8:23AM
Generally North-facing shores are calmer in summer because surf is coming from storms in the southern hemispheres (and therefore affecting South shores). That said, on a day like today where the wind is strong there will be some wind swell and associated currents on the North shore. Early in the AM and low tides provide more protection for places like Makua or Kee. See the seasonal surf trends page seasonal surf trends for more info and always check the daily conditions. Takes about 1 hour from Lihue

We spent a spectacular afternoon snorkeling here in May. The water was crystal clear and there was an abundance of marine life. This was one of the best single snorkeling days we have had. The entrance is very hard to find, but the scenery and snorkeling are worth it.

Having had a spectacular day in May, we are planning to return late January/early February 2008. Would Tunnels be a good bet for snorkeling at that time, or should we stay more in the south at Salt Ponds or Poipu?

I will be visiting Kauai at the end of July and wanted to know where the best snorkeling spots will be then. Thanks for all of your advice!

My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon in Kapa'a, Kauai! We will be there August 20th-27th 2007 and we're very excited! I was wondering if you have any suggestions for activities to do while we are there! We are for sure going to go snorkeling and most likely on a horse back ride! Are there any other things that are great to do toward the end of August?

D - Jan / Feb is prime season for storms in the North Pacific. The same storms that bring snow to North America create large surf North and West facing shorelines in the Hawaiian Islands. You might be able to snorkel at this time of year, but the chances are low. South facing shores are generally calm from October - April.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 30, 2007 7:23PM
Marjorie - the North shore is generally calm during July. Always check our daily Ocean Report for the current conditions / forecast.
Jul 06, 2007 4:34AM
My fiance and I are trying to figure out what time of year is the absolute best time to go to Kauai for our honeymoon. We will be staying on the Northshore near Hanalei. We were thinking January, however I keep reading about storms and huge waves! We must be able to get some great snorkeling in and we don't want any rain! Any suggestions for which month is best?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 06, 2007 8:22AM
Bandit - it can pour any time of year here, but it can also be very nice in January. If the North shore surf is large when you come in January the nice thing is that you can always go to the East or South shore. On the "garden island" we do get rain.
Jul 11, 2007 7:43PM
What's the best way to get to this beach? Is it possible to walk here from Ke'e Beach?
Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 12, 2007 7:36AM
The best access to Tunnels is via the Haena Beach Park. You can check with the lifeguards there for current conditions and tips on the best snorkeling / swimming spots. It would be a long - but beautiful - walk from Ke?e.
Jul 15, 2007 4:17PM
When are the waters the strongest?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 16, 2007 10:23AM
Surf, wind and tides all create powerful conditions at Makua. Summer is generally calmer but dangerous conditions can happen at any time of the year. Please read the safety tips.
Jul 29, 2007 2:18PM
I am not relishing the near 1/2 mile walk (by Google Earth) from the parking lot to the main snorkeling area. Furthermore I am concerned the parking lot will be full when I get there. Is there usually open parking?
Are there nearby beaches almost as good as Tunnels for snorkeling? I am planning to go there around Aug 10.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 30, 2007 6:59AM
Unless you beat the private dive companies to some of the nearby beach access roads (think 7AM) the only parking will be at Haena beach park and, yes, you will have to walk. Makua (Tunnels) is definitely some of the best snorkeling on Kauai. The facilities and parking are lacking, but once you get in the water the experience is amazing. Please check the Ocean Report for current surf conditions.
Jul 31, 2007 10:21AM
If we are staying in Kapaa on the East side and want to snorkel the Tunnels where should we rent snorkel gear?
Are there places on the way or at Tunnels itself?
Kauai Explorer Staff

Hanalei Surf Company or Pedal and Paddle. Have fun.

I am a strong ocean swimmer and would like to know which beach would be best for swimming 1 to 2 miles over beautiful coral reef, I can swim in all conditions but prefer calmer waters. I will be there the 1st of Sept.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 07, 2007 8:36PM
The term "strong ocean swimmer" is subjective and for that reason I am hesitant to recommend any one swim because the conditions change daily. Please contact us when you are here to get an accurate report.

Further to my previous question about renewing my wedding vows in September and since we are staying in Kilaulea that one of the beaches up North would be the nicest! Any feedback?? Parking, walking distance etc. Should we check out the site in advance???
We are planning our renewel at the 3pm and then are heading out to a celebration dinner. There are 8 people in our party and we are doing a very informal yet intimate renewel. All feedback greatly appreciated as this is our first visit to Kauai. Thanks Rosemarie

There are many nice North shore locations. I do strongly suggest that you spend a few days checking out Haena, Lumahai, Hanalei and Kauapea to see which you like.
Aug 11, 2007 8:15PM
One of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Please everyone stop walking and touching the reef your killing it! Also, you cant touch or chase the turtel's and the fish have plenty of food in the sea to EAT!!! Have fun and spread the word at the beach.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 12, 2007 7:17AM
Good points Rowdy - bringing fish food to ANY snorkeling location disrupts the natural balance and causes certain species to dominate. If people did not feed the fish there would be more diversity of beautiful things to see. Mahalo.
Aug 13, 2007 8:14AM
The list of guarded beaches is not up-to-date. Wailua beach is no longer guarded (due to budget constraints?). Tunnels is no longer guarded, but Heana beach (1/2 mile away)now is.
Thank you
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 13, 2007 9:13AM
Thank you Raymond - we have removed Wailua as lifeguarded. For simplicity we call the entire area at Haena Beach Park Makua or Tunnels.

Hi, my boyfirend and I are visiting Kauai in Mid Sept 07 and are really looking forward to doing some snorkelling and maybe some surfing for beginners! We are really torn between the North and South shore, which do you recommend, unfortunately we can only stay for 4 nights?!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 02, 2007 9:12AM
September is a transitional month so you can have calm (or rough) surf from the North or South. The nice thing about this small island is that you can always drive to the other side is the conditions are not favorable where you are staying. Hanalei Bay is a great place for beginning surfers.
Sep 06, 2007 1:26PM
Generally speaking, how is Tunnels during the end of Feb.? The Surf Trends graph shows the North Shore on the decline from "gigantic" surf at that time. Does this mean good snorkeling at Tunnels will be rare near the end of Feb???
Mahalo
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 06, 2007 5:42PM
February is still prime time for some big surf on ANY North or West exposed shoreline area. Yes, the surf is trending towards spring / summer, but this means that instead of 15-35 feet it is statistically in the 10-15 foot range. Remember that this is Hawaii - some small islands in a big ocean with no continental shelf and a reputation for the most powerful waves in the world!
There are always exceptions - we do get flat days in February and I have also seen many late-season "thumpers" even in March and April. The ocean is always changing, just be in tune and you'll find the right conditions for your activity. We encourage you to come and just be smart. Thanks for visiting and posting. WW

My boyfriend lives in Honolulu but we are taking a weekend trip to Kauai late this month (Sept). I am in charge of planning and can NOT decide on what part of the island to stay. I know you can't recommend a hotel, but can you let me know whether we should stay in the Poipu area, the Coconut Marketplace area, or the north shore area. We are in our mid 20s and would like to see the beach from our balcony but have some night life nearby. Thanks!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 07, 2007 5:06PM
Honestly Evince - Kauai cannot compare to the Honolulu night life scene. We go to Oahu to party but love Kauai for the outdoor lifestyle. Where to stay? Personally I recommends North but I know others who would disagree. Each area has unique qualities and advantages. W
Sep 07, 2007 6:16PM
I am planning on spending part of my '08 sabbatical on Kauai. One of the great joys of the time difference is getting up to watch the sun rise and then going snorkeling. What time does the lifeguard show up? I'll be on my own, and would prefer to snorkel someplace where I'd be safe. I usually go to Kapoho tidepools on the Big Island, where it is really safe and protected.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 08, 2007 6:57AM
Karen - Lifeguards are on-duty from 9-5 but frequently show up earlier. No location is safe every day or protected like a pool. Please stay in tune with the conditions and know the hazards / benefits of each location you visit.
Sep 08, 2007 8:20AM
Tunnels is a "protected" beach, is that correct? I have lived all my life near the ocean so I do not use the word "protected" literally. I have visited the North shore during times of high surf and the BIG freight train size waves were breaking beyond the reef. Is that always true? Or does the seasonal GIGANTIC surf come right up to shore, making swimming at Tunnels too dangerous?
Sep 08, 2007 10:29AM
I have been to Kauai many times between May & October and have found Tunnels to be a great snorkeling beach. However, for a smaller less known beach with great snorkeling, I recommend Hideaways Beach near Princeville Hotel. Lots of shade, great sand, not many and sometimes, no other folks there. Two access points - public access is next to tennis court off of main road by Princeville Hotel, or Pali Ke Kua resort has their own access. Up to 10m minute walk down bluff from parking site. Generally, lots of turtles, lots of fish. Best water clarity is toward north east side of beach past point separating the public and Pali Ke Kua part of beach.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 09, 2007 9:27AM
Yes gr8 - the outer reef at Makua (Tunnels) does offer some protection for the nearshore areas since the waves break far offshore. The danger is in times of big surf and high tides when the surf pushes water over the reef. All of this water pushing towards the shore must equalize and the result is a raging river of current going out the two main channels at Makua. Every beachgoer should know that where water pushes in, it must go out. Learn to recognize a rip (looks much like rapids in a river). You cannot outswim rip currents. W
Sep 09, 2007 9:44AM
I visited the island several months ago. Unfortunately, it was during record rains that even washed out a bridge and lead to loss of life. The island was still incredibly beautiful.
I am planning to return and am thinking of biking and camping around the island. Does anyone know if this is done and if it is possible? Thanks for any responses.
Sep 16, 2007 1:42PM
Dear Kauai Explorer Staff,
Thanks for the great site! Much good info here... I know and understand you don't make recommendations on places to stay but am still wondering how to find a B&B, house or hotel on the north shore near Ke'e or Tunnels beach. "Googling" doesn't seem to find anything in that area...
Thanks,
Rash

Vacation Rentals in Haena are very expensive. Think in terms of $2,500 to $10K weekly. Hanalei Colony is an option. There are no rentals at Ke?e because it is part of the Na Pali Coast state park.

We are going to Kauai January 20 for 2 weeks staying in Princeville. There are six of us, none us us swimmers. Which beach would you suggest that we could go to that would not sweep us away? After reading many comments it seems that this time of year is really good for surfers. What is the average temperature during this time?
Thanks very much for your comments.
Ersilia
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 19, 2007 8:07AM
Ersilia - the temps in January will be in the 80's. Sometimes cool but never cold. January is peak surf season for the North and West shores so you will have to be very careful in and even AROUND the ocean. If you do not swim then perhaps the pool is best - or at the very least go speak with the lifeguards. Hawaiian oceans are not be be taken lightly.
Sep 23, 2007 12:00PM
Does this beach have a lifeguard? I've been on several sights that say that there is not lifeguard. Also, are the bathrooms close in proximaty or is quite the walking distance?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 23, 2007 3:18PM
There are 9-5 lifeguards and facilities at Haena Beach Park - which is walking distance from Tunnels. If you are a surfer, Tunnels is the reef break far offshore. Scuba divers explore the Tunnels in the reef below. For snorkelers and those wanting an amazing view of Mt. Makana (Bali Hai), Tunnels is the stretch of beach accessed by walking North of Haena Beach Park.
There are no lifeguards directly in front of the best snorkeling and the conditions vary from swimming-pool to extremely-dangerous-raging-ocean. That's why you should talk with the lifeguards to get a report on the current conditions and read their signs.

Makua Beach, Anini Beach or Maloaa Bay... which beach is the best to stay near? I have a group of 7 who will be traveling in May who want seclusion and a nice beach to hang out at regularly.
Thanks!

Each of these beaches have unique qualities.
Oct 24, 2007 5:02AM
My husband and I will be coming in later March 2008 to stay for a week by Anahola Bay, we are looking for some great snorkeling, where would you suggest going!!?? We have been to Maui and love to snorkel at their secluded beaches ie. Honolua Bay, Kapalua Bay, Napili Bay and Olowalu, although the last time Olowalu had shark warning signs and murky water!! We are also interested in getting our scuba certificate!!
Nov 03, 2007 5:01AM
Nancy, I am right with you! Any info on obtaining scuba cert. while on Kauai? We have both been certified in the past but let it lapse.

I am planing a trip to Kauai in March for surfing. Im experienced with large and shallow coral reef surf.
Is March a good time to visit for big waves?
Is there camping at Tunnels? Where are the best places to camp near good surf?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 02, 2007 7:07PM
Hey Mark - March generally has good North and West shore surf. Not the biggest. You can camp at Haena Beach Park for free or at YMCA camp Naue for $15.
The truth however is that the North Shore of Kauai is quite expensive and there are only a few good surf spots which are usually crowded. Not like camping in Mexico or NZ. W
Dec 07, 2007 8:56AM
We are going to be in Kauai in a few weeks and were wondering if there are any good spots for new SCUBA divers?
Dec 10, 2007 11:00PM
Hey Eric,... When are you going to be in Kauai? I am somewhat knowledged of kauai Scuba. I am in Kauai from Dec 12 to 21 what about you?
Dec 23, 2007 7:11PM
Where is the best snorkeling the week of Dec. 26th?
Dec 30, 2007 8:18AM
I just found this looking for a B&B that I saw about 6 years ago when I was last in Kauai. It's at the NW end of the beach?? It was a cute place tucked up against the mountain. Anybody know the name of it? I'm looking to refer a friend to it, and actually would like to stay there when we come back.

Lots of rentals out here Tim - need more specific info to help you find that same rental. Try Google maps.
Jan 03, 2008 2:34PM
I am planning a staff trip to Kauai for 2009. We will be staying at a house above the bluffs overlooking Anini Beach. I am debating between the beginning vs the end of March. Is there a significant difference in surf, sunshine, rainfall or crowds in the beginning of March vs the end of March. I love to swim in relatively calm waters, I prefer sunshine and less crowding.
Additionally, is it possible to hike/walk down the bluffs to Anini Beach from the houses overlooking the beach? Is there another way to walk to Anini other than to hike down the bluffs?
Thank you very much.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 03, 2008 3:12PM
Hi Deborah - I cannot tell you whether the beginning or end of March will offer better weather. Statistically March is a transitional period from Winter weather towards a more stable Summer pattern - however the difference between beginning and end is pure luck. Depending on which home you have rented you can walk down the bluffs to the ocean. One could also walk on the road. Whatever you do, the North Shore offers some amazing scenery and exploring. Tune into this website for conditions when you are here. Aloha
Jan 05, 2008 5:56PM
Thanks for doing this...great info. We will be visiting Kauai and the North Shore (for the first time) in early March '08. Is it less crowded in this area during this time of year? Are there any beaches known for good shelling? How far on the beach can one walk uninterupted in the Tunnels/Kee beach area? Thanks
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 06, 2008 6:53AM
Laur - Hawaii is not the best shelling and you will have to get up early to beat the regulars. That said, I have found some nice shells over the years. Walking along the shoreline from Makua (Tunnels) to Kee is a wonderful experience. You will be rewarded by some areas where there are few (or no) poeple. W

I will be in Kauai April 5-12 will the north shore of Makua Beach be a good time for Snorkeling??
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 21, 2008 8:51PM
Aloha Jonathan. Makua Beach aka "Tunnels" is known as a great snorkeling spot. But the surf here can be very big and potentially dangerous at times. There is a lifeguard tower at this location so ask a lifeguard about conditions before going out.
Jan 22, 2008 6:16PM
Hi! I have been fortunate enough to visit Maui a couple of times in the past year, and I\'ll be heading to Kauai in April. Looking at some other vacationer\'s snorkeling pics, it seems the fish aren\'t as plentiful as they are at Ulua or Maluaka beach in Maui. Is this true, or was it just a matter of timing?
Jan 29, 2008 5:42PM
April 5-12 will the north shore of Makua Beach...How is the weather normally here for snorkeling. I will ask the life gaurd but I was just wondering how is it normally around April.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 29, 2008 9:32PM
Though one can never predict the weather, April is usually a beautiful time of year on the island, North Shore included. Surf can be dangerous at Makua, so you're wise to talk with the lifeguards on duty. You can also check out our Daily Ocean Report for current conditions.
Enjoy your stay. J
Feb 07, 2008 6:32AM
I really appreciate all the info and feedback on this site. I am totally impressed. I stumbled on it while looking for the best snorkel beaches on Kauai. I had to figure that out so I could figure out where to stay. The info on the site is great as well as the pictures. I am looking forward to coming to Kauai now, instead of wishing I was getting my way and going to the Big Island. You will be seeing donations from me for your expansion and I can't wait to see your Big Island beach guide. All the best to you and your wonderful staff.
Feb 10, 2008 7:02AM
Aloha. We went on a kayaking adventure two years ago and landed on a beautiful snorkeling beach called "Hideaway." It had no bathrooms or shower but it was beautiful and we noticed that people walked down a steep slope to get there. Do you recommend this beach and how do you get there from the main road? Mahalo!
Lee
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 11, 2008 8:29PM
Aloha Lee. The only access to "Hideaways" by land is from the Princeville Hotel parking lot. The steep incline you saw is the path leading down from this area. The path is very steep and the parking in the lot is extremely limited. People do snorkel at this beach but we have lost lives in this spot to snorkelers, so proceed with caution. As you probably know, winter surf can make this spot very dangerous. J
Feb 23, 2008 4:03AM
First off, this site is fantastic. Real useful information and has been a great help thus far. My wife and I are going to be in Princeville in mid May. We love to snorkel and it sounds like a lot of the beaches have strong currents. We are looking to add another great spot to our portfolio of tropical locations. We are also looking for a good kayaking trip...open ocean or river?
P.S. Do you know of any kayak/snorkeling trips?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 24, 2008 9:19PM
Thanks John - May is usually good snorkeling on the North Shore, just get the current conditions from this site, locals and lifeguards. The beaches around here CAN have strong currents buy that does not mean they WILL. Today in Feb it is like a swimming pool at Kee, tomorrow the surf will reach WARNING levels. Snorkel at tunnels and do a Kayak trip in Hanalei with Kayak Hanalei (by far the best). You might also want to do a boat trip on the Na Pali. W
Mar 15, 2008 4:06AM
We will be in Kauai and staying on the north shore May 24th through May 31st.
I have recently been reading about the time of the month that the box jellyfish arrive and wouldn't you know it, it will be that week. What I read indicated mostly on the west and south shores. Will that be a problem on the north shore. We are avid snorkelers and are somewhat concerned about this issue. Do you have any information on this
Thank you. Your web site is the best.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 17, 2008 5:25PM
Aloha Janet. Thanks for the feedback. Jellyfish can be seen washed up on the shore when they are present. Some beaches seem to have more of them than others, and they can be seen on all shores. A beach like Anini, which has some limited snorkeling, doesn't really see jellyfish. Haena Beach park is a good snorkel area and you can ask the lifeguards about them when you're there.
Have a great trip! J
Mar 21, 2008 5:46AM
There are many many more occurrences where the sharks don't attack, aren't there?
And isn't Bethany alive and doing well, still surfing and even winning some surf events?
God Bless Her, she's a real champ!
Mar 25, 2008 7:35PM
We were given a week in November at a place in either Princeville or Koloa. We want to explore all of the island, especially the parks (hiking trails), sailing, kayaking. We would like to daily be able to go in the water to snorkel or play in small surf by our lodging. We live on a beautiful and quiet San Juan Island, we don't enjoy crowds or city life and prefer to hike, sail, snorkel, explore... We have kids from age 10 to 14. Which of those two areas will be best for us to stay in Nov?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 27, 2008 4:39AM
Aloha Lisa. The North shore typically has high surf in November, but Anini beach (near Princeville) does offer a protected reef with rentals right there, off the beaten path a bit. It will still have beach goers. Poipu will have smaller waves but this beach park is often crowded. North shore is close to the Kalalau Trail and East side hikes. Poipu is closer to Mahaulepu Trail and Kokee. If you're willing to drive to the South and West side, you may find Anini beach a good fit. J
Mar 29, 2008 3:48AM
Can anyone tell me if the Poipu Beach Hotel is open yet? Contact info? website? Lotsa good memories there before Iniki wiped it out.
Mar 30, 2008 2:58AM
I am planning a trip for Feb '09. We will be staying in Poipu. Would like to drive to the north shore one day to enjoy Tunnels and Queen's Bath. Is there a way to get a surf report before making the hour + drive? Will not have internet - is there a surf report hotline?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 30, 2008 5:54PM
Mary - please ask your hotel or rental provider to give you a printed version of the report. This helps our cause and helps you too.
For Queens Bath in February I recommend extreme caution. People have died there. W
Apr 03, 2008 7:54PM
I don't think this beach should be marked as lifeguarded. We snorkeled here yesterday & the lifeguard station (actually at Haena Beach to the west) isn't even visible from here.
Apr 06, 2008 4:50PM
I recently heard that Ke'e beach was going to get a lifeguard. Do you know when this is expected to start? We suggest our friends visit lifeguarded beaches and would love to add Ke'e to the list.
Mahalo

Apr 07, 2008 8:45PM
Aloha Craig, Great advice to your friends, in regards to visiting lifeguarded beaches. Anahola just opened a tower at that beach. Yes, Kee will be receiving a lifeguard as well, but the exact date is yet to be determined. We'll keep our users posted as we know more. Mahalo. J
Apr 09, 2008 12:09PM
Thanks for this great info and necessary cautions. Could you offer a suggestion for best person to teach an old, fat white guy how to surf? And, of course, how I could get in touch with him or her? I'll be visiting the island for 2 weeks in October. I will be renting a car and staying on both the East and the South Coasts but will be willing to meet up anywhere. Prefer a private lesson with somebody who can truly teach. I have no board. I have a desire to learn at least some fundamentals before I croak. Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 09, 2008 7:00PM
Aloha Aptivus. There are plenty of companies that offer surf lessons and private lessons are available. We don't recommend any particular company, but you can easily search online for Kauai surf lessons and get contact info for various businesses. Happy surfing! J

I'm going to be staying on a residence on Tunnels beach from April 19-26. I realize surf is still in decline but moderate and I should check daily reports, but should I expect to be able to get in some good snorkeling at Tunnels during that time?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 17, 2008 3:53PM
Hi GregB. Sounds like you understand that it's hard to predict but that surf on the North shore is in decline in late Spring (though this week saw a pretty good swell and took a life at Lumahai). There's a chance you'll be able to get some snorkeling in at Tunnels during your stay. As you stated, just stay in tune with the ocean report and ask the lifeguards at Haena Beach Park if in doubt. Enjoy! J

Glad you've found the site helpful. Check out our Trails section for some of our favorite hikes. Kokee is full of them, also. For a long distance bike ride, try the Kauai Path that runs from Lydgate to Kealia. For the best chance of dry camping in the winter, check out Salt Pond or Polihale. Should the weather be nice, Anini is another great camp zone on the North shore. Enjoy. J

May 05, 2008 5:34AM
great website, very precise and correct information presented by K.E. staff/site.
Makua (tunnels) is a lifeguarded beach it is patrolled by a.t.v.(four wheeler) by lifeguards and constantly watched/checked with binoculars from tower#9 or Haena beach park. although a half mile away seems far to some, lifeguards are ready to help! they have the best equipment & training available and are very experienced with the extreme conditions of this coastal area.
The lifeguards at Haena beach park are there for your safety and will be happy to answer any OCEAN RELATED questions you may have. \"just remember they have a job to do and answering too many questions is a distraction\" so limit your questions and be nice.

I will be heading to kauai in late sept. 2008. I would like surfing lesson. Who do you recommend for surf lesson and water suitable for a average swimmer.
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 19, 2008 6:56PM
Hi Justin. Surf lessons have become quite popular over the past couple of years and a search online will point you towards several different schools. We do not recommend any companies in particular. Hanalei Bay is a common spot to learn. Tune in with the surf school and they'll know the best spot to take you for learning. Enjoy! J

May 19, 2008 7:03PM
Aloha Raija. Congratulations. Makua is a beautiful spot that typically has a good amount of sandy beach, especially in summer. For specifics about times of high and low tides, check this website I found: http://www.hawaiitides.com/Hanalei/MonthTides.asp. In terms of crowds, the beach park is a spot that many locals like to come to at the end of the day to BBQ and socialize. Still, it's a large beach with plenty of room for everyone. It also has a parking lot right there, which offers easy access. Hope you have a great day! J
May 27, 2008 3:56PM
Great site with great info. - and it\'s impressive that you guys monitor it so regularly!
I have a few questions: we\'re staying June 1-16 on Kepuhi Beach (around the corner from Makua):
1) per Google Earth it doesn\'t look like that far of a walk to Makua from Kepuhi - can you confirm?
2) the \"full ocean report\" currently lists visibility as \"good\" - is that underwater or just general visibility?
3) Do you have any thoughts on Kepuhi - like general conditions/safety info.?
May 28, 2008 3:58PM
We visited Kauai for the first time for my daughter's wedding in September '06 and CAN'T WAIT to get back. Tunnels was the first beach we snorkeled, and none of the other beaches on the north compared to it! LOVED IT and LOVE YOUR SITE!! Great information. Everyone needs to visit Tunnels for snorkeling, but remember, be kind to the reef--no touching (it's SHARP anyway) or stepping, right?? :-)
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 28, 2008 8:59PM
Aloha Gina. Mahalo for the comments. Don't forget that Tunnels has extreme ocean conditions and large surf in winter months, making it dangerous or impossible to snorkel here during that time. Lifeguards have a tower at nearby Haena Beach park. Tune in with them for the best info on water safety. J
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 28, 2008 10:13PM
Hi Gary.
1. Kepuhi is the point at Wainiha (the hairpin)
2. Makua to Kepuhi is about 2 miles - not so far on the road but tough on the soft Haena sand
3. visibility is water clarity
4. Kepuhi is calm today (rare) but has some very strong currents - not recommended unless you have an "ocean eye"
Aloha. J
Jun 08, 2008 9:00PM
We plan to stay at the north end of kauai mid to late June. We have kids age 6 & 9 w/some water experience. We'll follow safety suggestions but are wondering if Makua is relatively okay for kids, esp. the inner reef.
Thanks for this informative website!

Jun 09, 2008 7:58PM
Aloha Steph. The summer sees surf lessening on the North shore, Makua included. However, ocean conditions vary so you can tune in with the lifeguards there (and check our ocean report) to get the best idea for safety while you're here. This spot would not be recommended for children during the winter. J

Great website! I wonder if it is possible to camp at Tunnels beach? No amenities necessary, just wonder if it´s allowed or not?
Thanks!

We will be visiting the Hanalei Colony Resort the first week of October. Generally, what can we expect for weather and ocean conditions around the north shore area this time of year? How will the snorkeling be? Will we be forced by the weather to spend time over on the south side - I hope not too much.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 09, 2008 8:53PM
Hi. You'll be in a beautiful location that generally sees surf picking up that time of year. See our Seasonal Surf Trends to get an idea of what happens, island-wide.
http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/guides/beach/seasonal_surf_trends.php
Yes, the South shore may be sunnier and have more snorkel options in October, but you won't know for sure until you're here. Check in with the lifeguard at Haena Beach Park, near Tunnels. The Hanalei Colony Resort gets Explorer's ocean report, so you can ask them at the front desk for the day's report, too. Aloha. J
Jul 18, 2008 3:22PM
Hi, gonna be staying in Haena at the end of Dec begging of Jan. I know the surf is at its biggest this time of year, but will the reefs at tunnels and ke'e provide enough protection to shore fish and snorkel, on all but the biggest days?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 21, 2008 8:34PM
Hi Sam. You are staying in an area that can have huge surf this time of year. Even in the summer snorkeling can be dangerous at these spots. Plan on snorkeling and fishing on the South side in the winter and stay tuned with our ocean report and the lifeguards. Enjoy your stay - Haena is beautiful regardless. J

Hi, fantastic website, thanks so much for all that extremely useful info!
We shall stay near Tunnels in September for the first time in our lives. I love snorkeling, but I snorkel without fins, and I don\'t go down. I just lie on the water and enjoy. My questions are:
1. Is it a good idea to wear a neoprene shorty? (I don\'t move much, and I love to stay in the water for an hour or so. I am 58 years old.)
2. I own a PDF. Is it a good idea to wear it while snorkeling? As an extra safety measure? (Of course I will follow all your safety rules, check the ocean report and so on)
Thanks again for this great site!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 28, 2008 7:46PM
Aloha Brigitte. Good to be mindful of safety while snorkeling at Tunnels. The water is pretty warm in September, but only you know what is comfortable for your body. September is a bit of a segue month in terms of surf, as it can begin to pick up on the North shore. Stay tuned with the lifeguards at nearby Haena Beach Park and our Ocean report for the most accurate info when you're here. Based on that info, you can decide if you want to use the personal floating device. Mahalo for the feedback. J
Aug 01, 2008 3:37PM
Aloha! Fantastic website!!! Can't count how many people I've recommended this site already. We are staying in Kekaha and wuold like to plan our day trip to the north side. There are so many places to see that I think 1 day isn't enough to enjoy it all. There's the Hanakapi'ai hike, Tunnels, Queen's bath and Secret beach...all a "must see" while in Kauai. Any recommendations? We plan to leave Kekaha very early, around 5-5:30am, how long would it take to reach Ke'e to start the hike?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 04, 2008 7:01PM
Aloha Wallace. Mahalo for spreading the word about the site. If you leave the West side that early, traffic should not be an issue and you could probably get to the trailhead by 7 or 7:30. All of the North shore points of interest you mention are beautiful. Many hotels do not even offer directions to their guests for Queens Bath as it can be very dangerous. Stay aware of ocean conditions when swimming at Tunnels and Secret beach, especially during seasons outside of summer. Enjoy! J
Aug 07, 2008 3:51AM
I\'m going to be on Kauai from September 7th through the 21st. Basically I want to explore the island as a backpacker. Taking mostly day trips, camping on beaches, snorkeling etc. Can you tell me if there isa a public bus system that I could take that would drop me of near some North and South beaches? Or would i be smarter to just plan to stay at a single beach campground like Haena or Tunnels? Would it be difficult to get a permit for a two week stay? I\'d like to hike and see as much of the island as I can in two weeks without having to rent a car.
Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 07, 2008 8:26PM
Hi Tom. Kauai does have a public bus but it stops service at Hanalei. If you don't have a car, staying at Haena (which is the place to camp next to Tunnels) would put you in a remote spot beyond the bus service zone. If you want to camp, you may want to check out a more central camp location like Anahola or Anini (though it's quite a walk to the nearest bus stop from this beach). Our Ebook offers maps with all bus stop locations, lists of all parks for camping and links to the places to obtain permits. You may want to check it out. Enjoy! J
Aug 13, 2008 10:42PM
We've rented a beach house in April 2009 (9 people all adults) and it is right across from Kepuhi Beach. I know this is somwhere down from Tunnels and close to "Baby beach" and seems to be in Wainiha Bay? From the renters website at least. Do you have any information on this area and what to expect during the month of April?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 14, 2008 7:06PM
Aloha Alysia. Wainiha and neighboring Haena are remote, rural areas nestled at the end of the road on the North shore. It is lush and sees some of the most rain on the island. April can be rain or sun or both. Hard to predict. Tunnels and Kee beaches can be very dangerous with high surf, which may be happening in April. Both of these beaches are lifeguarded so check in with guards and our Ocean Report to stay updated. The amazing Na Pali Coast trail is accessed from this area as well. Hanakapiai is an all day, strenuous hike. Hanalei is your nearest town with grocery stores, etc. Enjoy! J
Aug 19, 2008 2:56PM
Great info, thank you. Is there any other way to find out about the surf/weather reports early in the morning, before one heads out for the day? I will not have internet access, and will be renting a house, so no hotel front desk to hand me a report. What about the television or radio? Thank you.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 19, 2008 10:34PM
Aloha Shelly. Though the lifeguards don't officially report the surf to the public until after 9am, you can hear a version of a report via the radio on Kauai Community Radio station in the mornings. On the north shore they are at 90.9FM and on the rest of the island at 91.9FM. If you miss it and you're desperate, you could probably call the DJ to ask them the report at (808) 826-7774.
Enjoy. J
Aug 20, 2008 10:49PM
Hi,
I would like to see spots like Wet Cave, Dry Cave and the Blue Room. It must be great to swim in the Blue Room, and I believe it cannot be dangerous either since there are no currents or surf.
I don't know exactly how to reach these spots. Could you please explain to me how I can get there?
Thanks!
Brigitte
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 21, 2008 9:23PM
Aloha Brigitte. I'm not sure what "Wet Cave" you're speaking of. There is a Dry Cave across the street from Haena Beach park and the Blue Room is further up the road. There are not dangerous waves in the Blue Room but the walk down is steep and on crumbling, rocky soil. The water is extremely cold and nearly black due to lack of light in the cave. Be extremely careful in this area should you choose to swim there. J

What can you tell me about Kepuhi beach? I know Tunnels is one of the best for snorkeling. Can you tell me something abouit Kepuhi though? Is is a nice beach to swim at in the summer weather and tides permitting of course. Do a lot of people visit Kepuhi? Thanx--S
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 04, 2008 6:28PM
Steven - Kepuhi is subject to some major currents in periods of wind or swell. Tides are not a big factor. Unlike Makua, there is no protective outside reef at Kepuhi. Unless you are an experienced surfer / water-person I do not recommend Kepuhi. There are only a few rare days when it is calm. W

Hi,
I\'ll be visiting Kauai in mid November and staying in Princeville. I have two small children, 4 and 5...and after reading your website, I am concerned about going to the beach. Which beach do you think is the most safe for small children? They are not swimmers, but which beach is safe for them to play in the sand and in shallow, calm water? Is there any?
And, what type of weather should we expect? Lots of rain?
Thanks for you input. The info on the website has been very helpful and informative.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 24, 2008 4:47PM
Hi Julie - the warnings on Kauai Explorer are not intended to discourage you from enjoying the beach. The great thing about an island is that there is almost always somewhere you can go that is facing AWAY from the current wind and swell. In November you can go to Hanalei Pavillion and talk with the Lifeguards. If the surf is big you can go East or South. I'm not gonna predict the rain - but the general mix of rain and sun is quite nice here (keeps things beautiful). W

We snorkeled at Tunnels beach this past Sunday afternoon and it was incredible. It is definitely one of the best places I've ever snorkeled. The reef, dropoffs and fish are quite a sight worth seeing. After snorkeling we stayed and watched one of the most beautiful sunsets we'd ever seen! This is a great place to take in the beauty of Kauai!

Hoping to snorkel at Tunnels Beach in mid Oct. (only a few days away), I would like to know how to read the surf report. What is a \"good\" range to expect safe water conditions, i.e. surf 1-2 ft is excellent, 3-5 is good, and anything over 6 is dangerous? Also, is this true for any beach or does each beach need to be ranked differently?

Oct 09, 2008 5:08PM
Hi Phil - keep your snorkel plans flexible and head south if the surf comes up. Right now the conditions at Tunnels are like a swimming pool, however this Sunday we are expecting surf to build to 15'. Dangerous conditions occur not just because of surf height, wind and tide are also factors. At any beach you should talk with locals and lifeguards, plus know how to recognize currents and hazards. If nobody is in the water, there is probably a reason. Not only is snorkeling in rough conditions unsafe, the water is stirred up and murky. W

Tunnels is a great snorkel spot. The underwater tunnels are filled with sleeping sharks its quite a site to see. just head to chung yung village for some haupia cake and some pakalolo and just meditate it's paradise baby! I love it here

Incredible info! Me and my wife will be there (prob Princeville) in late April/early May. Sounds like snorkeling conditions may be hit or miss. Hideaway Beach; how do people lose lives there; current or that steep walk you talked about? Looks pretty cool to head down in the am do some snorkeling and start the day. Is that an area where it is fairly obvious about the conditions or can yo find a report that has that beach included in it. Was also wondering about the river. Are there outfits that you can get in a few waterskiing sets in on the River? Do sharks make there way up this river? And is it near Princeville? Much Respect, Mike from Colorado

Hi Mike and Jen. April-May are transition months from Winter surf to smaller Summer conditions on the North shore. If you tune in to the conditions I can almost guarantee that you'll score some epic days in that time. The key concept is that our ocean is constantly changing - it never stays calm or rough. I have never heard of anyone falling down the steep trail to Hidaways but people get in trouble at nearby Queens bath all too often.
For conditions at Hidaways expect it to be affected by the same wind and wave patterns as the rest of the north shore. It is more exposed than inside Hanalei Bay. As far as the conditions being "obvious" that is entirely subjective. I always evaluate and understand the ocean before entering on any day.
Hanalei river is basically the separation between Hanalei and Princeville. You can Kayak or SUP up Hanalei river. People water ski on Wailua river (East side). I have never seen or heard of a shark in the river. W

My wife and I just returned from our fifth trip to the north shore of Kauai (29 October - 7 November). Since we love to snorkel, we kept a close eye on the swell and sea conditions as reported on the Kauai Explorer web site. This website is an incredibly valuable resource for all visitors to Kauai, but especially those who love to hike and spend time in the water.
As might be expected for this time of year, we experienced a few days with large NW swells (10-12\' surf at Makua Beach and Hanalei) followed by more moderate conditions that allowed us to snorkel at Ke\'e, Makua Beach, and our favorite beach between the east end of Alamoo Road and Camp Naue.
As the Kauai Explorer Staff have emphasized time and time again on this website, the ocean is constantly changing and always deserves our respect. During our stay we had large swells and windy conditions (a good day to drive out to the Kilauea lighthouse, visit the farmers market, and have a smoothie at Banana Joes), calm days with brilliant sunshine, followed by more high surf days in which the lifeguards closed Ke\'e Beach, Makua Beach, and performed a courageous rescue of a swimmer just east of Haena Beach.
I learned to board and body surf while attending the University of Hawaii in the mid-1960\'s. And while I have spent many years in and on the ocean, I am not the swimmer I once was. So, in addition to ocean swell and current conditions, I would also add that when you go in the water be aware of your own limitations! And always enjoy the ocean with a friend.
Finally, all of us who enjoy the rare and beautiful island of Kauai owe a debt of gratitude to the Kauai Explorer Staff for the hard work they do to keep the island trails and beaches safe.
Mahalo nui loa to all of you!
Aloha,
JB

I am going to kauai next summer.( aug 22).Are tunnel beach or kee beach less crowded in weekdays than weekend? where is the public parking for these 2 beach, at the end of 560?. Since parking is limited , which beach should I choose between tunnel and kee beach for snorkling( clear water and more fish) How early should I arrive to secure a parking space?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 02, 2008 5:33PM
Hi Polly - living in Haena I don't see a major difference in crowds between weekdays and weekends. Arrive before 10am and you'll get a good parking spot. Arrive at 7am and you'll get the place mostly to yourself. Since they are in close proximity you should check out both Makua and Kee. Each is different and special. W
Dec 22, 2008 2:22AM
We are arriving on Kauai on New Years Day 1/01/2009 for a 10 day stay on your island and then on to Maui for another 7 days. We are active, adventurous hikers, snorklers in our mid-50's. We are looking forward to exploring as much of your island as possible in the time that we have. We want to experience as much "local flavor" as possible and don't care to waste our time with the "Tourist traps". Any suggestions for local restaurants and other "out of the way" places would be most helpful. We promise to be respectful of your culture and your environment. We'll be staying in Kapaa for the first few nights and then in the Poipu area until the 10th of Jan.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 26, 2008 4:54PM
Hi Wally - thanks for your post. Your request for info on "local flavor" and a restaurant guide is a content area that we hope to develop in the future. Kauai Explorer is determined to provide real, non-commercialized info for explorers. All of this takes time and funding to develop. Look for our new site to launch in Feb. 2009. W
Dec 27, 2008 4:38PM
For local flavor, check out Tahiti Nui for drinks and good eats, the taco truck by the hanalei pier for fish tacos......incredible. And lets not forget the General Store/Gas Station for Breakfast Burritos or Pizza, my mouth is watering at the thought and I am smiling at the fond memories. Have great time while on Kauai
Dec 29, 2008 6:47PM
After snorkling Tunnels, which was asolutley my favorite snorkling and swimming beach, we ate at Red Hot Mamas. A hole in the wall. We had tacos and burritos. They had the best hot sauce. It was my favorite day on the island! Have a great time.
Jan 05, 2009 11:49PM
Just got back from Kauai (12-20 thru 12-27. Tunnels was the best snorkling on the island...breathtaking! Once you visit this beach you won't want to snorkel anyplace else. The island was great and the people were awesome. Can't wait to go back.

I am planning on getting married on the North Shore of Kauai in mid January. We were thinking Tunnels Beach would be very pretty. Are there large crowds at 4:30 pm, will parking be a problem, is there a better beach on the north shore for a sunset wedding?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 08, 2009 4:02PM
Hi Kelly - Makua certainly is a beautiful spot and most afternoons it is pretty uncrowded if you are willing to walk. Parking is limited and you should be mindful of other people using the area. Best to consult a local coordinator. W
Jan 31, 2009 8:21PM
We are planning to rent a house within walking distance of Tunnels in June. We have two chikdren who will be 12 and are resonably good swimmers. Is this beach safe for swimming?

My husband and I are planning our 30th wedding anniversary trip to Kauai in August. Is this a good time of year to go and what side of the island is best to go snorkeling/swimming/boogie boarding? Also what beach is best?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 08, 2009 5:55AM
Hi Kevin - Princeville and Haena are both considered North shore locations and therefore equally affected by Winter surf patterns. March does usually have a few days with calmer surf. W
Feb 10, 2009 7:37AM
Does this beach have shallow snorkeling areas (2' to 4' deep) or tide pool like wading area under a foot or few of water where kids can snorkel and see abundant invertebrate life? If not, is there any area in Kauai where I can find this? Thanks!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 13, 2009 4:08AM
Congrats on #30 Debbie - this site describes how Summer is generally calmer on North-facing shores and Winter is generally calmer on South-facing shores. Tune into our daily Ocean Report to choose your best location. "Which beach is best" is an impossibly subjective question. W

Aloha,
My husband and I will be visiting Kauai in April 9-16 this year and want to scuba dive but I hear that the water is crazy this time of year. Any suggestions? Where to go and what charters are safe and reliable? Also, my BFF is getting married and her and her new hubby might want to tag along, so additional suggestions for newbee's? All but 1 are certified. Mahalo for your reply!

Hi we are staying on Kepuhi Beach for a lovely 16 days! We can hardly wait. Our first time to Kauai. Is it possible to walk to Makau from Kephui via the beach? If so, would it be better to do since parking can be a problem? Mahalo--SA
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 25, 2009 1:24AM
Hi Steven - walking from Kepuhi to Makua takes about 20-30 minutes. The sand is soft in places but the walk is very nice. I usually bring a pack and shoes in case I choose to walk back via the road. Have fun. W

Mar 09, 2009 3:26AM
my family is planning on going to kauai during the middle of april, next month. we LOVE LOVE LOVE tunnels beach, but are apprehensive because of winter weather and the rougher waves on the north shore.
what are the conditions like in april? are they calm or...?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 09, 2009 5:55PM
Hi Paul - a common misunderstanding is that the North Shore is crazy rough EVERY day of winter. Yesterday (March 8) was really nice at Makua. The point is that you have to understand and monitor conditions, and that the ocean has GENERAL seasonal patterns. I guess a good comparison is that it does not snow every day of winter on the mainland. Know about safety and tune into our reports. W
Mar 12, 2009 8:31PM
Eh, howzit! I have an uncle and some other ohana who live in Koloa Town. My uncle is the pastor of the Old Koloa Church. His name is Pastor Harold Kilborn, my mom's bruddah. We come to visit him from the mainland once every two years or so. (I was born and raised in Pearl City, Oahu, but I now live in Colorado.) When we come to visit in mid or late summer (July or September) we like to swim at Poli Hale, Poipu, Tunnels and at Hanalei Bay. Most of the time the conditions on the north shores are calmer than the south shores in summer, but like you said, da ocean has a mind of its own sometimes. For the tourists... make sure you check da ocean report and be safe! Aloha!

My husband and I went to Kauai to attend and shoot his sisters wedding. I had heard about Tunnels prior to going and really wanted to check it out. I am so glad I did! It had the best snorkeling on the island! One thing I did to protect my skin, I put sunblock on then I put on a long sleved shirt. I also had on leggings with sunblock. Others in our group thought we were a bit crazy for doing this, but after they all got burned and we didn't, they started to do the same. Be smart and wear protection! Nothing worse than getting severely burned on your first day and not being able to go back out! (happened to my SIL)

My wife, relatives and I are coming to Kauai on May 20th. We plan to take a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast and read that leaving from Hanalei is best for this time of the year. Is this correct? Also, any recommendations on which company to use? Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 12, 2009 5:00PM
Hi Cavalanti's - we will only recommend those companies that graciously sponsor Kauai Explorer. These include Kauai Sea Tours, Capt. Andy's and Holoholo. All these companies leave from the West side. W

Great web-site! Thanks for all the useful information I found it very helpful.
My family of five are going to Kauai for the 1st time!! :) in the middle of August! What are the water temps.& condictions in the northern part of the island at that time? Is it better in the south? We aim do some snorkeling, is it safe to do so (NO jelly fish)? Does it rain alot in the summer?
Thanks
Sil from Oregon, USA
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 13, 2009 6:05PM
Hi Sil - water temps will be in the mid-70s around the island. There's not much temp difference North to South. It can rain any time of year, but summer is generally drier. W

Bringing the family the first week of June - including a 5 yo and a 16 yo. We're staying on the north shore near Princeville. I love to snorkel and want to both kids to have the experience. The 5 yo doesn't swim well, but we plan to keep her in a USCG approved life jacket when she's in the water. Any suggestions for family snorkeling spots that will be fun and safe for everyone?
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 19, 2009 5:24PM
Hi Jennifer - it's hard to beat Makua or Kee when the ocean is calm. Anini is also OK. Your 5 YO is going to have a hard time with a life jacket because the very purpose of a USCG type PFD is to keep your head OUT of the water. Some other type of flotation, or simply staying in shallow water would be more fun. W
May 20, 2009 3:06PM
Do you recommend diving or snorkeling at Tunnels? Is there much difference in what can be seen and is it worth the extra money to do a dive there?
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 20, 2009 6:33PM
Hi M - if you SCUBA at Makua you'll be able to access the deeper areas offshore. Snorkeling is a lot of fun too, but if tank-diving is your thing then the spot is pretty amazing. W
May 29, 2009 2:43AM
Love your site - so much great information! We will be staying on the north shore in mid-Jan 2010. Which beaches will be the best to snorkel that time of year? What is the likelihood of getting any safe days at Makua then?
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 30, 2009 7:06PM
Hi Tom - in January the trend is for North and West surf. If the surf is big on the North shore you'll have to drive East or South. Perhaps you'll get lucky and North shores will have a calm spell. Check the ocean report. W

Hi-Thx for this web site. We are looking to rent condo for two weeks at Hanalei Beach Resort mostly because it looks like there is a nice small quiet beach down from the property that we can walk to from the condo every day which is what we are looking for: Sandy beach with good wading and shade to walk to and from where we stay. Don't need actual swimming nor snorkel. Thx for suggestions. Bill.

My family and I want a warm weather, warm ocean water vacation to swim and snorkel mid july of 2009. Have been to Kauai north shore in late november before and experienced closed beaches because of northern swells and cool air temperaure. I'm also concerned about vog. Our kids are 14, 17, and 19--all good swimmers, but not strong ocean swimmers. We're from northern California and our ocean temps are very cold so most of our swimming experiences have been late or river. We love to snorkel and the kids would like to try surfing again. We love yummy healthy food--not greasy spoon, but fresh fish and meat are great. We'd like to rent a house or condo so that we can cook some meals at home. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?? thanks, Deborah
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 13, 2009 5:15PM
Hi Deborah - sounds like you're looking for a vacation planner! In July the North shore will be calm for swimming / snorkeling. Temps are consistently around 80 degrees F - we are actually in the sub-tropics. Unless the wind turns variable we don't have vog - Easterly Trades blow about 70% of the time. Papayas in Hanalei has great whole foods and the fish market sells fresh fish. Also we have Tuesday and Saturday farmers markets. There will not be much surf but for learning that might be good. There are a number of vacation rental homes on the North shore (although the County is trying to shut them down). Hope this helps. W

We will be staying at a condo at Princeville the end of this month and first week of July. Hi Jeff - there are a number of marked beach access roads in Haena. Once you are on the beach ask the locals or lifeguards about locations and current hazards. Don't park in no-parking areas or you'll probably get a ticket. W
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 18, 2009 8:36PM
Hi Bausee - Haena is the best snorkeling (either at Kee or Makua). There is also some good stuff below the bluffs at Princville at a spot called Hidaways. I'm pretty sure Peddle and Paddle in Hanalei rents masks with prescription lenses. W

Hello. This would be our first trip to Hawaii / kauai and are interested to know how you compare with Grand Caymon beaches and calm oceans which is what we are really looking for. We want to relax and not do much except for enjoying the sun. Can you suggest any place on the islands like this with little tourist and quiet beaches? Thanks

Do you have suggestions for the best accessible beaches? My daughter who is 18 uses a wheelchair. We will be renting a beach wheelchair and plan on some pushing and pulling to get her to the beach, but would like to know which beaches are the most accessible. Thank you!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 18, 2009 6:05PM
Hi Chris - Lydgate and Kealia are accessible. You can also access beach areas at Hanalei and Anini, both of which are really beautiful. With the beach-wheelchair it will be much easier and the sand is harder at those tow locations. W
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 18, 2009 6:09PM

My wife and I have been to tunnels many times. We always snorkel in the easy spots within 30 - 40 yards of the beach. Looking at google earth I see there is a great deal more to explore inside the reef. Is it safe to enter the water just inside the right side of the reef and snorkel around the big dropoff just past the shallow areas near the beach? (well inside the reef of course)
Jul 21, 2009 8:32PM
I\'m really glad I came across this site before we arrive in Kauai next week (July 27 - Aug 3). My wife and I will be coming with our son (7) and daughter (5). I was hoping to take them snorkeling in Poipu or Lydgate but now I realize our timing isn\'t good for the South. Would Tunnels and or Ke\'e be too dangerous for young kids even if it\'s calm and we don\'t go out past the reef? I have no interest in taking any risks but would love to have the kids experience some real snorkeling as opposed to the pool in our backyard. Thanks for any suggestions.

Aug 01, 2009 8:53PM
Hi Keen - I'm not sure exactly where you are talking about but the important point is that it's only safe when the conditions are suitable for snorkeling. Makua has many great areas for swimming / snorkeling but they can also be deadly. Each beachgoer needs to recognize hazards and of course tune into our daily Ocean Reports.
Kauai Explorer Staff

I am travelling to Kauai in September and plan to do some camping but would like to camp in a place that is relatively well occupied (as I will be travelling alone), is Tunnels beach a good option and are there any other suggestions? I also wanted to know if the road to Tunnels Beach is accessible from Hanalei by bicycle.
Aug 04, 2009 9:46AM
If I'm staying in Poipu but want to visit Tunnels Beach, how should I do it? Where can I drive, park, and then hike in?
Aug 08, 2009 5:27AM
My girlfriend and I are coming to Kauai in early September and are looking to do some beach camping on the North Shore mostly (but also the South Shore or East Shore for a night or 2). We are both experienced campers and are looking for a good beach that you can camp at possibly with some good snorkeling like 'tunnels' (preferably not an actual campsite, "backcountry" style). Where are some good, safe (in terms of crime, if that is a problem) spots to do this? Please let us know!
Thanks!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 09, 2009 7:17PM
Hi Zack - please camp in the designated areas simply because "backcountry" style means you'll be defecating in areas where there are no toilets. The public campgrounds around here are not that well maintained so I suggest YMCA Camp Naue (Haena) or Waipa in Hanalei.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 09, 2009 7:36PM
Hi Erin - it's gonna be about 1.5 hours driving from Poipu to Makua. Parking is at Haena beach park and the father you walk, the more you'll be rewarded with beauty and seclusion.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 09, 2009 7:40PM
Hi Charlene - I recommend Camp Naue in Haena over the beach park. Cost is $15 / night and it's more peaceful / safe. The bike from Hanalei is about 6 hilly miles. Traffic can be heavy at times.
Aug 11, 2009 7:18AM
My wife and here in Princeville and have been to Tunnels, but haven't gone snorkeling yet. With the tropical storm coming will it be safe to snorkel this week??
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 11, 2009 5:58PM
Hi Kurt - while the storm is producing surf on the East shore and East exposures like Lumahai, inside Makua will be much more protected and calm. This is especially true when the tide is lower because less water will move over the outer reef. Low tide today is mid-day. W

Hi M - each island is uniquely beautiful. Kauai is smaller and we have a lot of amazing wilderness. I can't say that Makua will be calm in December - it probably will not - you'll just have to check our Ocean Report and choose your destination based on the day / activity. As far as safety, if you are smart and prudent it is very safe. Have fun.

Hi,
My husband and I plan to go to snorkeling this Sat but we're not very good swimmer. Can we rent a lift jacket from the beach? What is the best time of the day ~ calm water to snorkeling?
Thanks!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 22, 2009 7:02PM
Hi Wendy - mornings are calmest right now because of the low tide and less wind. You could rent a boogie board in Hanalei. Lifejackets are not the best because they are designed to keep your head OUT of the water.
Oct 28, 2009 8:13PM
Have been to Kauai 4 times (Love that Island)and snorkeled at Tunnels and Kee several times each trip but always on the inter reef. 5th trip planned in Sept. 2010. I'm a fair swimmer. Is the outer reef safe for me if surf in low?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 30, 2009 5:39PM
Hi Fred - it's hard to answer that question because of variables in your ability and conditions. Even when the surf is small there are inherent hazards. Swim with a buddy and always make sure you have plenty energy to make it back to shore.

We're considering renting a house in Haena that backs up to the YMCA campsite. Do you think that will be crowded with lots of campers for Memorial Day weekend?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 13, 2009 9:57PM
Yes - that is a busy weekend out there.

I hope all is well with everyone with the recent flooding.
Will be on Tunnels the first two weeks of Dec.
How does the area look right now?
Nov 24, 2009 11:45PM
I will be visiting kauai on jan 28-31st and I want to snorkel. what are the chances that I won't be able to snorkel during that time? and whats the weather and surf conditions like? thank you
Nov 25, 2009 7:48PM
Currently in Kona and will be in Kauai staying in Princeville starting on the 27th. This is my mom's first time to Hawaii. Last time I was in Kauai was Sept. and I loved the North Shore beaches. Didn't really think about it being Nov/Dec when I booked this trip.
Are any of the North Shore beaches good for snorkeling and swimming in Nov/Dec?
If not, what is the beach closest to Princeville that you'd recommend?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 26, 2009 4:47PM
Hi Jen - you might get lucky and find some calm conditions on the North shore this time of year but more likely you'll have to go South.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 26, 2009 4:48PM
Hi Hanna - the chances that you'll get to snorkel are almost 100%. If one side of the island is rough then you can usually go to the other side for calmer conditions. Right now - big surf and rain on the N shore.
Dec 05, 2009 3:34AM
a great web site.
we are planning a trip to Kauai, our second trip. Our first trip only lasted for two days and that was twenty years ago. This time, we plan to stay for full seven days. My wife and me love snokeling but we are novice. We will stay in Poipu beach area. What beach in the North or the south you would recommend for us ?
Dec 10, 2009 3:38PM
Stevenson,
I just returned from the Poipu area, and had a great time. As a novice snorkeler myself, I can tell you I had a great time and saw many things snorkeling at Poipu Beach (they have a lifeguard) and over by the Beach House Resturaunt (no lifeguard)... I felt comfortable at both locations.
Have a great time!
Jan 18, 2010 10:09PM
will it be possible to snorkle on the north shore middle of feb- end of month? are there protected shallow areas?
Jan 24, 2010 11:26PM
Hi,
We will be getting married on Kauai in early April. Our plan (fingers crossed) is to get married on Tunnels Beach in the late afternoon. Can you recommend a section of the beach that would be a great place to get married (slightly less populated, still have views of "Bali Hai" in distance). We usually access the beach just past the 8 mile marker (like the guide books recommend). Is there access before, or right at, the 8 miles marker? My 77-year-old Dad has mobility issues, so we're trying to avoid making him walk any significant distance. Any guidance you would be greatly appreciated.
Mahalo,
Stacey

We're coming to Kauai the last week in March, with our almost-5-year old daughter and almost-8-year old son. We are staying in Princeville...where are the safest beaches to take the little ones? My son is a good swimmer but not used to "ocean" swimming, and my daughter can swim, but is still a novice. Any advice is appreciated!! Mahalo!

Feb 26, 2010 12:18AM
My fiance and I are planning on having a sunset wedding on the beach in Kauai in mid-May. Our folks are attending, and my Mom has some minor mobility problems (a bit of arthritis and problems with her hip) that would make hiking down the beach for long distances an issue.
We're leaning towards Tunnels beach, but is Tunnels beach close to the road? Or is there a better beach in terms of getting to the water easily from the roadway/parking? Is it feasible to take taxis over from the Hanalei Bay area, or should we all 6 try to pile into 1 car so we don't have to try to fight with finding 3 convenient parking spots?
I just want to make sure I pick the right beach before I have to pay for all the permits and insurance fees.

I'm thinking of relocating to Kauai and have 2 golden retrievers. How dog-friendly is the island, and can I walk them on the hiking trails and beaches?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 22, 2010 5:10PM
Cara - Kauai is struggling with dog-friendliness. As a dow owner myself I have been reprimanded on hiking trails, in parks and on beaches. The humane society gives $500 fines if you have your dog unleashed at Hanalei. But on trips to the mainland I see everyone hiking with dogs, no problem.

Is November much rainer than other months ?? should we be looking to go to another Hawaiian island in November or are we in witht a chance of reasonable weather ??

Dear KES: I apologize in advance if this question was already answered in another string.
My husband and I are escaping foggy and cold SF the last week of May/first week of June, and want to spend most of our time on a sunny, warm beach where we can go in the water. We also plan to do some hiking. The North shore rentals and environment look more our style (less concrete) but the South seems to be sunnier. If sunshine is a priority, would you recommned we stay in the South, or will it not make much of a difference that time of year? TIA

I just returned home from my week on Kauai, and I have to thank your entire staff for the great job you do on this website.
With the weather being very windy and not exactly tropical, I used your info every day to determine the best place to go for surfing or snorkling.
If you didn't put the time in on this site I defintely would have missed out on my vacation. Mahalo.

Hi Carrie from SF - North Shore is definitely amazing and less developed, but South has more consistent sun. You just have to weigh these factors and make a decision.
Apr 20, 2010 4:55PM
Great site and thank you for taking the time to keep it updated. Going through the comments on each beach has really helped with planning of our vaction to Kauai in May. I really only have one major concern and that is regarding the Portuguese Man-of-War...We we doing an open water dolphin swim on the Big Island and 3 out of the 4 of us were stung...and it really does hurt. I have two questions, 1st are there any paticular times of year that they are more prevelant? Also I\'ve heard that if there is a full moon that they will be out for several days after that. Is this true? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 22, 2010 4:56PM
Lisa - Man-O-War come in with certain wind conditions. If you see them on the beach, then expect them in the water. We also post warnings on our ocean report.

Is it possible to reserve a space at this beach for a picnic? Is there an area with tables/benches?
If not, do you recommend a beach with these ameninites and has surfing/snorkeling?
mahalo!

Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 30, 2010 5:12PM
Carol - I don't know of any public beach in Hawaii that let's you reserve tables. Just pack a picnic, some chairs etc and head to Makua - you'll have fun.
May 03, 2010 2:34PM
I don't have any questions, I just want to give a big "thank you" for taking the time to answer everyone's questions here. Your advice has been an immense help to those of us who have never visited Kauai!
May 04, 2010 4:53PM
Coming to the North Shore in late June 2010.
Cannot wait to snorkel this area. My question is when the surf is 10-15 ft as it is today is even the shallow reef area of tunnels dangerous?
What do you consider a calm day surf height wise?
2-4 ft less than 6 ft etc....
Mahalo
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 04, 2010 4:54PM
Hi John - the surf will not be 10-15' in June. Check the Ocean Report, we'll let you know where to go.
May 05, 2010 3:11AM
Tunnels is an extrodinary break and when the east winds blow it is beyond compare. Definitly not a beginners break. If you venture to the other side of the bay, cannon's and chicken wings offer lefts of the same quality with the right conditions. They just don't handle the east wind well.
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 08, 2010 4:57PM
You can take Joe's advice - just know that he's not a local and Chicken Wings is not in Haena.
May 08, 2010 6:51PM
Its been leaked that "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" will have days of filming in Haena.
Will they be there in Aug?
The filming will be great for the local economy, however no so great for our August visit.
Just looking for some local knowledge.
Thanks
May 10, 2010 8:50PM
Trip will be in Aug, but I\'m starting the research. This website is a GREAT resource !
On thing I noticed when I started looking at maps is that Makua beach is actually before Haena, just from the read I got the impression you had to hike away from Haena.
Secondly I enjoyed a lot traditional plate lunches in Maui, where we found a restaurant with awesome food & really inexpensive. Any tips on such a place in Kauai ?

was Tunnels closed temporarily on 5/14 or 15 due to a tiger shark siting? How often are they seen here?

My husband & I just got married June 12, 2010 at Makua Beach aka Tunnel's Beach. We had the ceremony at 6:15p which was just perfect to get some golden afternoon photos before the ceremony & breathtaking sunset photos after the wedding.
Neither of us had ever been to Kauai or anywhere in Hawaii for that matter and sutbbled across Makua Beach. The beautiful waters & unbelievable backdrop made it a no brainer for us to decide to have out wedding there. There were 9 other guests including ourselves & it was fabulous! If you have your wedding at Makua Beach/Tunnel's you will definitely NOT regret it! Congrats & good luck!

Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 18, 2010 5:13PM
Shelly - both places are so amazing it's hard to name one as better. The best solution is a house that is comfortable and to explore the North Shore. If i were to pick one place, it would be Haena. Check our daily Ocean Report.
Sep 20, 2010 6:25PM
thanks for the input - this is a really great resource!
I know ocean conditions are impossible to predict, but is the shallow/shore area generally fairly safe for young children to play at in Haena or is there often riptide or big waves crashing right on the beach (early to mid october)? we will definitely be checking here daily for ocean reports while there, of course.
Sep 24, 2010 3:38AM
Hi, here is a question I have not seen posed on this site and hoping you can advise. Is there a particular day of the week where the crowds are lowest around Tunnels and Ke'e? Spending 10/21 - 10/31 on Kauai in Po'ipu and it will be a long drive up and want to have some confidence we can find a place to park if we arrive around 9:30 - 10:00 am since we will be leaving close to the end of rush hour. I was thinking Monday might be a lighter day with fewer locals and no cruise ship in port.

Oct 24, 2010 8:40PM
Love, love, love your website. Plan to use it daily on my trip in August to check ocean conditions to help plan my days. I will be staying in a rental home on the beach about half way between the west end of Alamo\'o Road and the east side of Makua Beach. I understand that ocean conditions change daily and I need to use commom sense and caution. I\'ve been swimming/snorkeling at Kephui and Makua and enjoyed both but I haven\'t seen anything in your website about this length of beach inbetween those 2 areas. Does it provide good swimming or snorkeling on calm days. From looking at the satalite photos, I see that it doesn\'t have a large reef like Makua or Kephui. I\'d appreciate input from someone who has been there in person. Mahalo
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 25, 2010 8:00PM
Hi Francine - the area from Kanaha to Kepuhi is not protected like inside Makua or Kee. There are a number of reef points and channels with strong currents. Conditions are usually choppy except for a few very calm days annually. Use caution please.

Hi I'm visitng Kauai for the first time over Christmas & new year and want to get some bodyboarding done. I surf in the UK when I can and would class myself as more of an intermediate bodyboarder. How experienced would you say someone has to be to surf these breaks? I'm wont be looking for the big big waves but again don't want small ones. Where would you recommend the best place to try? Also over the winter period, is there surf pretty much most days?
Thanks and look forward to gracing your shores.
Nov 18, 2010 5:09AM
We are visiting Kauai Thanksgiving week, and staying on the North Shore for the first time (we usually stay at Poipu). What beach would be the best beach to snorkel with kids, (north or south shore)? Will we be able to see any whales, and if so, where would be most likely to see them? Thanks for any info that you can provide!
Dec 11, 2010 1:37PM
We snorkeled here numerous times on our last trip in August 2008. My husband and my mom were both bit by the Picasso Trigger Fish. I tried to tell them to stop following the little guys but they didn't listen until it was to late! We are going back December 26th and will snorkel here again but I will steer clear of the beautiful yet very protective fish!

People like 'courtney' should be shot.
I'm sure the beach was beautiful without her 'it's all about me' drivel.

My daughter (7yrs old) and I are coming to Kauai during her Spring break in April (18-25th). We would like to snorkel (and I have taken her snorkeling last year in Honduras). She can swim but obviously only at a kid level. I was wondering if you could point me to some areas where could stay and be in walking distance to snorkeling (for kids) and other beach activities (sand castles, digging for shells etc). Also any place you\'d recommend for sea-kayaking (any outfitters?) and small, kid friendly hikes.
Thanks!

Hello! We are looking at renting a vacation home at the mouth of the Wainiha River. The owner says that we can swim (or kayak) across the river mouth to the sandbar at Wainiha Bay. I understand that the beach here is not for swimming, but is it safe to swim at the mouth of the river? One guidebook says that it is a breeding ground for sharks! Also, are there opportunities for fishing on this river or at the beach? Thank you!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 09, 2011 6:38PM
Hi Theresa - Wainiha is pretty cool, definitely local style. The water in the bay is generally murky because of the river / runoff. It's not shark infested and sharks breed in many places (what guidebook stated that?). The fishing is better than most places.
Jan 16, 2011 10:04PM
Thank you so much for the response Winston!
Off The Beaten Path: Hawaii, 9th Edition. Page 44: "WARNING: Wainiha quite appropriately means "unfriendly waters." Not only is the beach treacherous, but the river mouth is a nursery for baby sharks - so steer clear."
Guess it might be ok for kayaking/ fishing - but swimming across to the beach doesn't sound like a great idea - especially if the water is murky.
Jan 31, 2011 8:23PM
How does the surf height relate to snorkeling conditions at Tunnels? Is the surf height, the height outside of the reef? If that is correct,at what height does the surf start impacting the snorkeling inside the reef? Thanks much. I so look forward to my upcoming trip and plan on using this web site before heading to a beach.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 01, 2011 6:21PM
HI Vicki - we post the surf heights at the outer reefs on our daily Ocean Report. The large reef at Makua buffers the inside area of the reef, but all of that water pushing over the reef must equalize and move back out. The current can be quite strong inside even when the surf is not huge. It's a combination of surf, wind and tide. When the tide is low less water comes over the reef and the result is less current. The main concept to remember is that conditions are always changing. Check with the lifeguards, observe the conditions, talk to locals. If the water looks like a swimming pool, then the current is probably not so strong. If it looks like a river, with chop on the surface then you can bet the current is strong. WW

Where else can you see turtles in the water while snorkeling besides Makua?
Feb 18, 2011 4:27PM
I will be in Kauai in April (9-18) and wanted to know how the snorkel conditions will be on the North Shore (Tunnels/ Ke'e)? I've heard alot about winter vs. summer months but I'm not sure where April will fall into the seasonal fluctuations? Any thoughts?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 19, 2011 8:16PM
Mac - April is generally calmer as we transition into summer, but it's impossible to know what exactly the conditions will be. Check our daily ocean report.

My family will be traveling to Kauai the first week of June. We have reserved a house near Haena. The home is close to the Hanalei Colony Resort. This will make for our 3rd trip to Kauai but our first with a toddler. My daughter is 2.5. Know of any great activities for toddlers on the island? Also since our home sits right on the beach it would be awesome to have a bonfire on the beach one night and cook some hot dogs and do smores. Is this allowed on the beaches?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 26, 2011 6:33PM
Hi Kim - bonfires are not technically legal unless you are cooking something. Make sure to let the fire burn completely down instead of covering with sand and leaving hot coals. Can't help you with the toddler activities.

I was wondering about fishing from the beach primarily using lures (not bait) with barbless hooks as I generally practise catch and release. Can you point me towards a couple of good surf/beach fishing locations? Or alternatively, to a fishing store in either Hanalei or Poipu that I could obtain info from. Many thanks, and congrats on the info site. Cheers, Peter

Hello. My wife and I are visiting in the next few months. She is not wanting to snorkel because it will be during her "time of the month" and fears sharks may smell her. I told her it is highly unlikely but that I would resesrch. Should women not snorkel during their period? Is there a higher risk of a shark attack?

My family and I are planning on being on Kauai in Jan-Feb 2013. What kind of waters can I expect? Where could a family of various fitness levels go snorkeling?

Is there a local tip line or website available to find out if a beach is closed due to bad or dangerous conditions, before you actually make a trip to that beach? Thanks!

We are planning to visit Kauai for our honeymoon in January. We would like to snorkel as much as possible. Would the water be too cold around this time of the year would snorkelling be difficult around this time? which side of the island would you recommend for us to stay in January?

Where is the closest place to camp near Tunnels. My boyfriend and I are going there in February.

After the big flooding last year and contaminants traveling into the waters as well as earth etc.
How much damage to the reef has been done?

Camped at Haena on the night of Feb. 1 and it was fantastic. Big surf coming in crashing on the shore - not sure how big, but big enough to deter everyone else from going near the ocean, and certainly bigger than any human being. Was surprised to see some young folks (looked like tourists to me but what do I know?) go tromping straight into this huge surf in the morning, right in front of the lifeguard tower, with not a peep from the tower.
I was really surprised. To be fair, they did much better than I ever expected and did not totally get rocked and rolled. The young woman got tossed a bit and was soon looking distressed, but managed to get herself back out. My question is really about how unwise these folks were REALLY being, or is that even possible to answer? I mean, I would NEVER go out in what they were going out in, but I might have different standards that apply just to me.
The lifeguard seemed to be using binocs to focus on the surfers WAY out on the huge break to the east and I am not entirely sure he was watching what was going on right in front, but I am not sure that is really fair. Seems a bunch of other folks on the beach were concerned about these young folks entering this huge surf as well and all of us were sort of nervously approaching the tower. Were we all crazy and overly concerned for no reason? Just wondering and wanting to understand better... Is entering such surf really safer than it looks for those who know what they are doing (not that these folks seemed to, but they might have lucked out)?

Hi Mo - those of us that grew up in powerful Hawaiian surf know how to deal with the awesome power. Actually we like it. You can definitely still get hurt, or killed. It's all about knowing your ability, fitness, understanding currents, reefs, waves, reefs and channels.
Problems happen when people blindly go in the water or near rocks with no experience whatsoever. It's baffling and upsetting. LIke, I would never attempt to fly a plane without experience or training. So far in 2013 we've lost 4 people - 1 in a rip current, 1 due to an apparent medical issue and (the most tragic) two fools that wandered out on the rocks near Kalihiwai in massive surf. They were taken out by a big set of waves and died, right in front of their wives.

Hello,
We will be going to Kauai in 2 weeks. What time does the beach park close? Also, will we be able to snorkel in the afternoon? Thanks!

We will be in north shore by the colony resort mid August 2013,..what kind of bugs will we have at that time of the year? What will the temps be during the day and evenings if we are renting an ocean front house?

Just got back from Kauai and Maui and Tunnels was the best snorkeling on both islands - not because of fish count, which was basically the same on both islands, but because of the closeness of water critters. Upon entering the water I was staring face to face with a friendly turtle. We ended up seeing about 5, all within 50 feet of the shore. A beautiful beach too with the craggy green cliffs in the background. A highlight of my Kauai experience.

My husband and I are planning a trip to Kauai late October 2013. We would like to a bit of boogie boarding snorkeling, where is the best place to go? We would like a quieter beach, less people if at all possible. Is there easy transit or bus system on the island to get around from beach to beach?

Hi. Coming to Kauai in early Feb for conference. Staying at Poipu beach during the week. We thought we would also spend a few days in Kapaa -- does the rain typically find Kapaa in early Feb? Thank you for this great feedback...learning lots.

Hi!
We are a family of 5 from Sweden and are planning a trip to hawaii in beginning of July. We would like to have some adventure and some surf. we are choosing in between Maui and kauai. It seems that kauai is prettier and not as busy as Maui. Please give us some recommendation of where to stay and generally where it is best to surf in summer. Thanks Anne

Hi, My husband and I are returning to Kauai the 3rd week in August this year. We usually come in Sept and stay in the south. This year we are staying in Hanalei and wish to explore the beaches here. I have read a great many of the comments on this site am do not see very many people mentioning that they are visiting in August. Does it rain more? Are the oceans more dangerous? Is it a lot hotter? I hope to snorkel at Tunnels. Do you think it will give me a better opportunity than the late fall months? Any disadvantages in staying in August? Thanks

Are there many shark siting when snorkeling? Is it safe to go in the water in the Tunnels?
Apr 24, 2014 11:05AM
We will coming in September, will the snorkeling be safe at the tunnels this time of year. Also should we stay in Hanalei or would the weather be better in Poipui?

Susan - it's impossible to predict the conditions in September. It could be calm, there could be surf. It could be rainy, it could be sunny. Also, never consider any beach "safe" until you have assessed the conditions and your ability.

Hi! My husband and I are coming at the end of November and are staying in the East side of the island. Would you say that the North side of the island is best for snorkeling"

Visiting in early March and would love to be able to snorkel at Tunnels if conditions allow sometime during my visit. What kind of surf forecast would indicate it is safe? Are there lifeguards at Tunnels?

I am going to be staying in lihue ffom Dec 21 thrue Jan 3rd 2015/16 I am a decent swimmer but have never snorkeled. One of my main desires while on this "once in a lifetime" vacation is to do some spearfishing. are there many places to rent the equipment needed? and are there any special licenses needed to either spearfish or sport fish? needless to say I am an avid fisherman and would love to experience all that I can. Thank you for any help and advice that you can offer.

Hi - I am wondering if it is possible to camp for a longer period of time - like a month or two -- at this campground or any other campground on the island. ??
Thanks !!

I will agree some of the best snorkelling on the island is found at Tunnels. When conditions are good the outer rim is awesome. I have swam with many turtles, have seen reef sharks on the west end in deep water 3 times and have been buzzed by 2 Hawaian Monk deal pups while the mom layed on the ocean floor watching. Since 2010 I have seen a steady increase in turtle and Monk seal sightings in Tunnels as well as Annie. Alway check with the lifeguard and be careful of the current.
