Pihea is super easy and wide open (no bushwacking). The views of Kalalau valley are truly breathtaking - if there are clouds just wait around for them to clear because Hawaiian trade winds push weather over the ridge. It's super cool when you are in the clouds then it just opens up all of a sudden.

We hiked this yesterday and the road is now open and nicely paved all the way to the end.

The views were amazing! A little hard to find without an open ranger station. The trails were very muddy and steep, but we loved every minute of it!

My husband and I are going to Kauai at the end of October and we are really excited about the hiking opportunities. Neither of us is an experienced hiker, but we love the outdoors and are in good physical shape. Could you possibly recommend a type/brand of shoes that we could purchase and break in before our trip that would be best for us to do a considerable amount of hiking while we are there? Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi Robyn - at my house there is a shoe graveyard and here is what I have found...
Open shoes (Teva-type sandals or Keens) do NOT work well. The mud gets between the footbed and your foot and creates some slippery action.
I currently use the top of the line Soloman trail running shoes - a little slippery but very durable and lots of support. Also have used the Teva trail runners (closed shoes). The Teva rubber is very grippy on both wet and dry terrain. The downside of Tevas is that they are not very durable. W

Thanks! You totally saved me from getting the wrong shoes. I ended up with the Merrell Chameleon (womens), which are SO comfy. Luckily enough the shoe salesman was born and raised on Oahu, so he was super helpful! I can't wait to hit the trails, and this website rocks!

could someone please tell me how I can get to this trail from Poipu?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 20, 2007 5:38PM
From Poipu drive to the West side and turn up the mountain in Waimea or Kekaha - there are two roads leading to Kokee. Pihea trail is at the very end of the road in Kokee, past the park headquarters. You might want to check this out on a Google map or similar.

Looking forward to celebrating 24 years of marraige in December 07 trip. Would like to go on this hike but was wondering how steep is the trail and how long is the hike. We are in fair condition from a high altitude state (Colorado). Would you recommend this hike for us? Love your website!

Nov 16, 2007 2:40PM
Congrats Penny - Pihea is short and (relatively) flat by Colorado standards. There are much tougher hikes on Kauai. If the lookout feels easy consider going on towards the Alakai swamp trail junction. W

I wouldn't recommend this as a hike to celebrate a marriage. I would go out to the Kilohana lookout at the end of the Alakai swamp trail, or I would do the Honopu ridge trail. The honopu ridge trail ending has one of the most spectacular views I have found on the island. It really rivals what you see in a helicopter, believe it or not!
Feb 03, 2008 2:12PM
Scott,
I've always wanted to do the Honopu ridge trail, but all the guidebooks say the trail is closed, but kept up by volunteers. How was it when you went? I'll be on Kauai for 2 weeks next summer and would love to do this for a dayhike. thanks for your input.
Feb 28, 2008 3:38PM
We were here EARLY in the morning. Got on the trail and enjoyed the sights that disappeared under the clouds just before noon. This hike rates at the top of some of our most memorable hikes. Just wish we had more time.
Feb 29, 2008 6:42PM
Did this hike in Jan. 08. Turned back, at the junction of the Alakai swamp trail - about 1.7 miles. The day was beautiful but (word of caution) it was VERY muddy and slippery on the trail. Pretty steep in places, harder down than up, of course. Five of us went, all different levels of experience, me being the least experienced. But, I have to say, I LOVED every minute of it. The closest to heaven you can get - absolutely gorgeous. Went back and did the Alakai Swamp Trail two days later. Beautiful hikes.
Mar 29, 2008 4:16AM
just hiked this today. View is spectacular. It's one mile to the Pihea Vista and one mile back but with the mini stops along the way to find our footings and catch our breath, it took 2 hours! Well worth it though. I felt like a rock climber!

we have a 4 year old and a 6 year old who are avid hikers. they have great endurance and great balance...but they are young. can they do this? how long is the drive from lihue? i believe that will be hardest part for these two kids who would rather be on their feet than sitting in the back seat of a car! thanks, in advance.

Hi Rhonda - the drive from Lihue to Pihea is about 1 to 1.5 hours. I have hiked Pihea with young kids and yes, the car ride is not as fun as the exploring. Suggest you make a full day of exploring the West side and Kokee. W

Hello, we will be visiting Kauai in June and would like to hike a bit. Is Pihea do-able with 3 children, ages 10, 7 and 3 1/2? Thanks
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 12, 2008 9:45PM
I'd recommend checking out the Berry Flats trail instead. Pihea is a challenging hike and not advisable for a 3 1/2 year old. Berry Flats leads to a forest with "menehune" huts, which is fun for the kids. More info can be found through the Kokee Museum at www.kokee.org. This site will be posting info about this trail in the near future. Enjoy. J

How do you get there from Kappa
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 03, 2008 6:53PM
Hi James. Travel South through Lihue toward Poipu. You can access the trailhead to Pihea from Kokee State Park, which is at the top of a road that leads up from Waimea on the West side. Stop in the Kokee Museum for a more detailed map of the multiple trails in Kokee.
Enjoy! J

Aloha Andy. There is no official Honopu trail and we only know of two humans who have ever attempted to get to Honopu by land. Do not try this "trail" as it is extremely dangerous and could be deadly. J

Jul 15, 2008 9:56PM
Aloha Wallace. The Pihea hike is pretty strenuous, especially for younger hikers with little experience. If you want to experience these views, park at Kalalau lookout and then walk the asphalt road to the second lookout, which is where the Pihea trail begins. It's a gentle walk with rolling hills among wild plum trees and other flora. The Kokee Museum will have more detailed maps about family hikes. Ask about the Berry Flat loop. Kokee is a beautiful spot for the family. J

Aloha Shelley. The Kilauea Lighthouse offers a great spot to observe numerous sea birds. They even offer binoculars and information. Kokee is also another spot good for watching forest birds. You may also want to check out the following website, which offers contact with other bird watchers. There is a contact listed for Kauai. Please respect that these are serious birders. Enjoy! J

Hi:
Just returned from Hawaii. Great trip! First day in Kauai, we hiked the Pihea Trail. My wife and 14 year old daughter went too. Not that I am a whimp but, that hike to the end was tough! You have correctly labeled this trail as 2.1 miles (one way) but the Park Service has it labeled as 1 mile out and 1 mile back. It's a tough 4 mile hike. I would call it a tough moderate. On the other hand, it all depends upon the weather. If that trail gets wet, then all bets are off! Wet it's a difficult ++. That trail reminds me of the old stories of my depression parents that walked to school up hill both ways. On this trail you start out going down hill and end up hiking up hill at the end. It's the same thing on the return trip. Heavy tree roots, pot holes and mud! I made it to the brass trail marker but, I was determined. Wife and daughter bailed out about 3/4 of the way and I heard about the tough hike for the rest of the 2 week trip. Frankly, I thought it was a character builder but, the family felt otherwise. Great views! Beautiful hike! Not for the casual family outting.
At one point the clouds traveled through a break in the trail. It's like a notch in the mountains. The clouds passed through at 50 mile per hour, very cool! I loved it!

Mahalo for the comments, Mike. There are other more mellow trails in Kokee. For those not wanting something as strenuous, you can stop by the Kokee Museum next to the Kokee Lodge for info and maps on other hikes. J

This web-site is fantastic! A big mahalo to everyone who has posted their amazing exepriences. I have been to kauai twice, but have not hiked there yet. Do you have any info for the lodge/cabins at Koke'e. My wife and I took the Pihea Trail hike on Sept 19, 2008 and it was a fantastic experience. We went to the Pihea Vista and must say the last portion of the hike (after the boardwalks) to get to the Vista was very rough, steep and muddy. It was a challenge and the view once we got there wasn't worth the effort but the challenge of the trail was. If not interested in the trail challenge, when you hit the boardwalk on the trail, you've seen the best view of the Kalalau Valley. I highly recommend the hike.

Pihea is wide and slick right now but doable. Just have to watch your step. The path has a lot of hard clay so "burning rubber" occurs if you don't have good hiking shoes. Beautiful views as always!

We loved the hike up to Pihea. It was late afternoon and while the clouds shrouded the valley much of the time, we were still able to catch clear views from time to time that are stunning and worth the wait. The last 1/4 of the hike up is challenging and on the muddy side in places right now. We're both in decent shape and experienced hikers...it was challenging enough to be fun without ever being too tricky. On the way back we unsuspectingly took the wrong fork in the trail and ended up going 150 yds or so before thinking it wasn't the right trail due to the different "boardwalk" that, we later found out, leads down to the Alika'i Swamp. Good thing we noticed when we did otherwise we could have been hiking a relatively slippery and technical trail at night. A good reminder to take cautionary provisions (light, etc.) if there's ANY chance you're going to be out later than expected.

Hey there. My sweetie and I took this trail out towards the Alakai Swamp with my four year old. We're not what you'd call typical hikers. I have serious injuries that have me walking with braces and a cane, my four year old is a spitfire pilot reincarnated, and my sweetie is a pretty active forty something. We tried this twice, and had to turn back the first day due to extreme fog and slippery rainy weather. The second time, we managed to make it about 1.7 miles in before turning around, and by the time we had made it back to the parking lot, me and the kiddo were done. It was a grand experience, I must have taken 300 photos, and the kid enjoyed it as much as I. A word to parents though: I kept him on a leash/rope harness the whole time, and he still terrified me going near the edges. NOT FOR SMALL WILD CHILDREN without CLOSE supervision. On a hiking scale for the somewhat crippled, it was a definite 7 on a scale of 1-10 hardness, 10 being fahgetaboutit. I'm glad I did it though, was worth the pain, and in my younger less battered years, it would have been a piece of cake. Beautiful trail, well worth the hassle.

Hi, this is a question not so much about trails but accomodation. We are a family from Germany and will come to Kauai in August. As we like to do some hikes in the northern part of the island and we are looking for a nice and not to expansive accomodation there. Anybody who has an idea? We are two adults and our 7 year old son.

Great Website! Will be walking Pihea in a week! Is Pihea overlook of the Kalalau valley before or after the intersection with Alakai trail? How long is the total round trip if you take Pihea to the Alakai intersection and then Alakai to Kilohana overlook? How long would that "combo" hike take at a moderate but steady pace? Thanks!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 24, 2009 8:25PM
Hey B - the Pihea overlook proper is beyond the Alakai trail intersection but you'll have views of Kalalau valley all along the way. If you connect to the Alakai swamp trail from Pihea and then hike to Kilohana lookout the round trip is going to be about 8-9 miles. I have done this hike but not actually measured the distance. Took me about 4 hours. W

We are going to Kauai soon and would love to see as much as possible. We will be traveling with a 6 foot 6..290 pound 13 year old that has an size 18 shoe. Great work staff. I wanted to do some camping this time around. Hanakapiai, not Kalalau. Kokee, and various beaches: secret, lumahai, polihale, anahola, hideaways. How does the permit thing work? Do I need a permit for every place I want to camp? got a number? cost? Do you know anyone who could drop me off on Honopu and swoop me up the next day? Thanks again for all your great work/suggestions.

Hi Miguel - glad you like the site. The only LEGAL campgrounds are at Haena, Anini, Salt Pond and Polihale. Permits are through the County of Kauai office. Camping if prohibited at Honopu. The permitting system and info is admittedly cumbersome, but the places are great.

My boyfriend is 6'5" and his legs went to sleep when we kayaked the Hanalei River. I think the 13-year-old with the big feet would be better on terra firma or trying surfing. My suggestion for finding all the great trails is the Kauai Trailblazer guidebook since it has so many safety tips and includes water hazzards. We were there last April.
Oct 21, 2009 3:17AM
My gf and I did the Pihea vista hike today and it was spectacular! The views along the ridge are unbeatable and the weather was fantastic up there. The trail looks as though it would be really slippery in some sections when rains come, but for us the trail was dry and firm. I would recommend avoiding the trail during rain unless you have good hiking shoes and possibly trekking poles. If you take the side trip to the vista, be advised the last 100ft before the is quite steep, requiring good footing and use of roots and trees for support. The views along the trail were generally better than at the vista due to the overgrowth of bush around the viewpoint. When you reach the viewpoint you can go another 50ft past the marker, through the trees, for a nice view of the next ridge and valleys to the north. Great short and sweet hike!
Oct 30, 2009 3:33AM
We hiked this trail today and out toward/through the swamp. It was very cloudy when we got to Waimea Canyon, (even early in the morning) and we couldn't see anything. Rather than go home, we decided to hike this trail. It was drizzling and very slippery. We weren't prepared for the length of the trail and couldn't see anything. It was very relaxing while we were out in nature, but the views were clouds right in front of us. Definitely skip it on a rainy/cloudy day.
Nov 12, 2009 11:14PM
Agree with Andy. Easier hike than most, but can't see anything when it's clouded in and the trail gets quite slick in the rain. Can imagine great views when it's sunny though!

We are going to Kauai in April and wanted to know if there was a way trail into Kalalau Valley? I am experienced cross country hiker and would like your input.
Jan 28, 2010 8:02AM
Hiked the Pihea trail today, and it was very muddy and slippery. My wife and I are enthusiastic hikers if a bit out of practice, and this was well beyond us. We turned back after a mile. Had a great time, took many wonderful pictures, but had to take it really slowly. Heard from someone we met on the trail and then saw again in the parking lot that one person broke an ankle and another broke a wrist while we were on the trail! Not surprising, since half the trail is steep up and down "stairs" of slippery mud. Also, no views of the ocean side the whole time, but lots of nice views of the other side. One of our most amazing experiences of our trip, but definitely a challenge!

Mar 14, 2010 11:01PM
We hiked this trail on March 11th, along with the Alakai Swamp trail. Both trails have beautiful views, great forested areas for birding, and very interesting and lovely plants and other scenery. We took the very steep trail to Pihea vista, which rewards you with an amazing view where you are surrounded by mountains on all sides. We saw a rat up there--very cute, looked like a mouse. We also saw a beautiful red forest bird at Pihea vista. These are amazing trails, but people should be aware that the Pihea trail is really very difficult. It is significantly harder than the first 2 miles of the Kalalau trail. Hiking poles are an absolute must! As a previous poster noted, the Pihea trail is basically a muddy, slippery staircase. It's worth the effort, but be prepared for a strenuous first mile and half or so.
Mar 15, 2010 6:01AM
Lisa, Would you recommend the the first two miles of the Kalalau trail over Pihea for scenery? Did you hike into the falls? Thanks for the feedback.
Mahalo!
Mar 15, 2010 6:02AM
Thank you Lisa. That is good advice. I will make sure we bring the trekking poles. Did you like the Pihea or the Alakai Swamp trail better?
Mar 17, 2010 6:56PM
Jim, Both trails offer beautiful scenery, but I think the Kalalau trail does offer more stunning and majestic scenic views than Pihea. I only hiked to Hanakapi'ai beach, so I can't really speak to the falls. But on the first 2 miles of the Kalalau you have those amazing cliffs, plus the beautiful surf. One of the best views on Pihea is actually the one pictured at the top of this page, and you can see that pretty much from the lookout at the top of Waimea Canyon where the Pihea trail starts. If you go all the way to the end of the Alakai Swamp trail there is supposed to be just an absolutely amazing view, but unfortunately it was cloudy the day we were there. Regarding Alakai versus Pihea, I would pick Alakai, but you have to do Pihea to get to Alakai. I believe you can only access the Alakai trailhead directly with a 4WD vehicle.
Mar 24, 2010 7:06PM
Lisa, You were absolutely right. The Kalalau Trail is the way to go. The trekking poles were helpful. The view from the lookout is great as you start Pihea. It was a cloudy day. Lots of rain last week! Thanks again! Jim

My husband and I hiked up the trail on Saturday, March 27th. It was a beautiful and clear day. The trail was muddy and the soil compacts into your boot treads which makes it rather slippery (I slipped and fell twice). Poles would have made it easier, but it without them works if you just hang on to the branches and roots sticking out of the ground. It was fun!

Hi Julie - the only campground in that area is at Kawaikoi Stream. Check with the Kokee lodge.
Jun 25, 2010 7:36PM
My wife is a reasonably good hiker but she has some trouble with heights. We are hoping to use this trail to link up with the Alaka'i Swamp trail and don't necessarily need to climb up to the Pihea overlook. As the trail goes around the rim of the Kalakau Valley, does it skirt close to the edge of cliffs, etc., in a way that would be frightening to someone with a fear of heights? Are there any other parts of the trail like that? Thanks, Howard.
Aug 06, 2010 8:59PM
We hiked up there in July. The trail is wide at the top and there is no chance of slipping off the edge, just don't get too close, stay in the middle. It was steep and slippery with big ruts at first so a hiking pole made it much easier. Once you get through the sloppy part and don't hike up to the Pihei lookout, the trail becomes mainly boardwalk through the swamp. So beautiful, unwordly and well worth the trek to the end. We lucked out and had a view of Hanalei. The Kauai Trailblazer guide had good pictures and a good description of what was in store. We also took some of their other recommended trails in Waimea Canyon. Some of the best hikes we've ever taken and we are novices.

Is anyone aware of a way to get from the Pihea trail (kalalau lookout) into the Kalalau Valley? I've been absolutely obsessed with this...

No Michael - there is no trail from Pihea to Kalalau.
Dec 04, 2010 6:52AM
Hey thanks for the quick response. I know theres no official trail. My question is... Is it possible. Since the very first time i stood in amazement at the kalalau lookout, ive been asking myself, How can I get down there. Sure ive done the kalalau trail hike 14 times now. Each time hiking a little bit further up the stream only to find myself looking up to the lookout wondering how to get up there. It seems to me that its possible to begin the pihea trail, then break off north continuing around the rim past keanapuka to Alealau. At Alealau go west along the Kaaalahina Ridge. Then rappel to flatter terrain. Im fully aware of the danger, but Im loosing sleep over this, constantly looking at satallite photos. Has anyone ever made it into that valley without falling into or having to hike the kalalau trail? Any legend any story? Big fan of the website, Thanks.

Interesting Michael - I know it's doable and even have spoken with some people that climbed out of Kalalau to Kokee. Just don't have an answer for you regarding the route. Fact is that there used to be a route to Kokee but vegetation has really changed the landscape.

Great website! Wondering if mike or anyone else thinks this hike is good to do with a 2 1/2 and 9 month old in backpacks of fit hikers?

We are coming to Kauai in March and just starting to plan....we want to do a hike for aobut a 1/2 day hauling a picnic lunch with us. Moderate trails with some elevation for views...possible viewing of a waterfall? Which hike would be recommended for this time of year (late march) Thanks!

Linda - it's typical January weather here. Beautiful days mixed with rainy days. It's wonderful.

I ran the trail to the campsite today...it was awesome. For casual hikers there are some fairly large puddles and muddy areas that will likely cause you to get your feet wet. The trail was beautiful, the views were incredible. Going down to the campsite was fun up to about mile 3, but it became a bit dull the closer you get to the site. Overall, though, outstanding running / hiking trail. Don't be intimidated if there is some cloud cover at the trail head, it breaks quickly and you can find plenty of clearings along the trail to get spectacular views.

Me and my family took this trail in October of 2010. What a hike. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The hike was great. I am afraid of heights but you don't have to be anywhere near the edge if you do not want to be. The sign said 1 mile to the overlook but it seemed longer than that. It was a great experience for all of us, including my 69 year old mother. She walked half way through the hile. After looking at the pictures lately she says that she should have tried to walk the whole way. It was a wonderful place to be.

Brian,
I haven't seen much on trail running and was debating about how conducive the Pihea/Alakai combo was to shortening this 4 hour excursion weather and conditions permitting? I have done a little hiking on the island (Kalalau to the first falls, Honopu Ridge) so am familiar with the challenges, but there seems to be varying feedback on the difficulty of this route.
Jan 26, 2011 6:53PM
My husband and I hiked the honopu ridge trail loop last April. We learned of the hike in an old trail guidebook. We were unaware at the time that they have sinced closed the trail, and it is not longer mentioned at teh visitor center or current guide books. We were lucky to have hiked shortly after some volunteers had bush wacked the trail, even so the brush, prickly bushes, and physical trail were difficult to locate and maneuver. At one point towards the end of the trail, the forest became so dense that we no longer could find the trail and searched for some time for a way out. It also took quite some time to locate the trail. We drove our 4wd, as far down the mohini drive as possible, then headed out on foot until we saw a clearing on our right. At the end of the clearing there were 4 stacked stones that turned to be the trail entrance. The trail was between 6-8 miles in length overall. It took most of the day to complete as footing along the canyon is especially dangerous. My husband and I are very experienced hikers having hiked and rock climbed in Jackson Hole and currently live in Acadia National Park, even with this experience we both agreed this was extremely dangerous. At one point the trail "dissolves" into the side of the cliff and you only way through is to walk/crawl along a goat path while gripping the edge of the canyon wall, all the while sand, dirt, and rocks, tumble down the canyon around you. That said the hike was truly legendary. Only those with extreme physical ability and experience should attempt it. As a side note to compare the extreme nature of this hike, we ran up and down the sleeping giant, and along the alkai boardwalk, and also completed the kuilau pihea trails,as well as numerous others. Those in comparison were completely different...

Thanks for the report Desiree - the only thing I'm questioning is if you really hiked Honopu Trail. You don't access it from Mohihi, rather the start of the trail is right next to the paved road on the way to Kalalau Lookout. I think you did something different. WW

Very informative website! I have a question about this trail (pihea)...I am really psyched about hiking trails like this, primarily for the veiws they seem to have! But, alas I am a *teensy* bit afraid of heights :). I di hike along the edge of the grand canyon, though and I was fine...how "scary" is this hike in terms of being super close to the edge? Or in terms of dangerous drop-offs? We are hiking with a 7 year old, also. I am not worried about endurance, as we all hike fairly often and she (our 7 year old) can keep up with us easily! I am thinking more about the narrowness or closeness of the trail to the edge.
Also - in terms of weather...we are coming out there next week (early April). Has the weather been sunny, and how many "dry" days do you need to wait before the trail is considered safe and in good condition?
Can you advise, please? Or recommend any other great scenic hikes that are do-able with a child?
Thank you!

Kate - Pihea is not one of those trails where you are walking on the edge. As for weather and endurance, those are variables that you just have to use judgment on.

This hike was great! We did it approx 8 years ago on our honeymoon. Contrary to what was mentioned above, it was a great way to celebrate our marriage! Parts of the trail (higher up) were eroded pretty bad. The roots of trees were exposed and we had to scramble a bit. No complaints though as it added to the adventure! Would definitely recommend.

A friend of mine claims to have recently hiked down to Honopu Beach from Kokee. Is this possible? He supposedly did it with his 9 yer old son and NO climbing equipment...

Jason - your friend either has the location wrong or is telling stories. There are old trails into other valleys, but never Honopu. There is a trail to the ridge above Honopu.

Traveling to Kauai for the first time and interested in hiking. We have not done any hiking before but very interested in doing so in Kauai. Can you suggest any trails for beginners like us? And any other do not miss type places when we are there for a week. Thank you appreciate any suggestions.

Are any of these hikes good for sunset views? We are relatively experienced and can navigate back down moderate terrain. Hoping to get up one of these peaks and catch a sunset while Im up there. Suggestions....

My sister & I will arrive on March 16th and intend to do several hikes. Your site has helped the most with information, directions, maps and insider tips. We now feel much more at ease--Thankyou!

I hiked the Pihea Trail yesterday. The views are stunning and ever changing due to the clouds. Best to go early as your chances of clear skies are better. BTW, according to the sign at the beginning, it is only 1 mile to the Pihea Lookout, and it is worth every step. Much of the trail is VERY UNEVEN but relatively easy to navigate as people have worn footsteps in it. Several places are like climbing an uneven stairway. Dry at this point so little danger of falling even though it is rough, but it would be pretty tough if wet as it gets very slippery. While I recommend making it to the Lookout, just going part of the way gives you amazing views of the beautiful Kalalau Valley.

Agree with most everyone here. We hiked it Nov 13, around 10am. It was actually blue sky clear! But on the way back the clouds rolled in. We heard others starting out say gee there is nothing to see here!
We stopped like most people after the boardwalk section. Previous rains made the inclines very slippery. And when we got to the steeper rocks/tree roots section we laughed & retreated. Up is ok, coming down is a different story.
We bought a hiking trail map at the lodge, although really did not need it since we only hiked this and Kalalau Trail only to the beach.
Thanks everyone for great posts! You definitely helped us out.

Hiked entire trail yesterday with my wife, 6 year old daughter and 8 year old son. I was wearing flip flops and they wore shoes. Trail was completely dry and weather was perfect. We started in late afternoon and views were amazing!

Wondering what it is like to do a sunset hike? has anyone on here done this? I have to imagine the sunset would be gorgeous from about halfway through the trail?

while looking through many hiking trails comments on your site, one of your staff mentioned a trail that I cannot find anywhere... they called it Kilohana. Does this go by another name perhaps? can you tell me where it is? we are coming from Vancouver to Kauai in Dec this year and want to find hiking trails that we can do with our girls -7 & 9 yrs old. Ok with moderate (some strenuous) terrain.
thanks

Hi Marlene - another name for the Kilohana trail is the Alakai Swamp Trail. This trail can be accessed from the Pihea trail or via the Camp 10 / Sugi Gove road.

Awaawapuhi, Alakai Swamp Trail, Hanakapiai - all good hikes.
Nov 23, 2014 6:05AM
Your Pihea site needs some pruning and listing should begin with most recent comments instead of the oldest. The view of Kalalau is nowhere better than from the two main lookouts and the trail to Pihea is in abominable condition. The surviving parts of the boardwalk are shredded and dangerous. Any serious accident would be disastrous to resolve. Go well prepared.
Jan 13, 2015 6:51PM
My husband and I completed the Pihea hike today. I would agree that the hiking effort was moderate but the end portion of the trail is tough due to the condition of the trail. It is important to wear good foot wear, since you are literally crawling up with only hand holds and foot holds.
The views are amazing

I am coming to Kauai for a week in January. Since I am recovering from a head injury and my balance/coordination is not as great, I am looking for a beginner/intermediate hiking trail. The Napali Coast hike looks too dangerous due to the narrow trails with a steep cliff drop off. Could you recommend some trails that still give a similar view? Is this one doable? I can handle a steep/uneven trail as long as it is wide enough in case I stumble a bit. I just worry that if I stumble on a narrow trail on a cliff edge, I might fall.
Jan 11, 2016 7:02AM
Are there any more recent comments on the trail conditions?
Feb 03, 2016 2:10AM
My wife and I hiked the Pihea trail on February 2. The weather on the drive in was glorious: partly cloudy, and cool enough that hiking was comfortable with light long pants and long sleeve sunburn protection shirts. The view down to the ocean to the north was amazing for most of the afternoon, with mist coming and going. The view to the south was spectacular too; we could see all the way to the ocean through a notch in the terrain.
The trail was fairly challenging with good boots and trekking poles. For much of the way, the surface was a mix of very soft rock (the tips of our poles dug in a bit) and hard-packed mud, with scattered patches of soggy mud. Further along, there was a lot more of the soggy mud.

Does this trail go along cliffs with sheer drop offs or just steep inclines with trees and brush slopping down?

My husband and I are looking for a good backpacking hike to camp in Kauai. We are young and in decent shape, but NOT experienced backpackers or athletes, so we think we might be in over our heads with the famous Kalalau trail. Is Pihea trail a good/easier/less dangerous alternative for those still looking for a backpacking/camping experience? Any other suggestions?
