Does anyone know where we can rent a bike and if there are any tandem bike rentals on the island? Are there any other bike trails like this one on the island?!

Roshee - check out the Bike Doctor in Hanalei or Kauai Cycle in Kapaa for bike rentals and group rides to Kauai's epic trails.

This trail is an excellent choice for wheelchair users who want to get out and see some of the coastline. Cross slope is moderate.
The path appears to be very well maintained - we met maintenance workers who were clearing gravel and mud from the path after several days of rain.
I\'d be very interested in learning about any other wheelchair accessible trails - this was just about the only one I found during my two week stay on the island.

I am wondering if there is a movement to re-allow leashed dogs back onto this specific path. It is a wonderful path that I've walked dogs on (prior to and throuhout the construction project) while my tax dollars were at work to make improvements to it! Locals and visitors alike have loved both having a great place to walk their dogs and to meet people walking their dogs and now suddenly there are cops on bikes handing out tickets! Does anyone else think that this is unfair to our furry friends and their leash-using owners?

You may want to check in with the non-profit involved with this Path at www.kamalani.org. They may be able to give further insight. J

Aloha Stephanie. You may want to check in with Outfitters Kauai, a tour company that offers tours to Kipu Falls in the Lihue area. This spot has taken lives and can be dangerous, so we recommend only going with an official guide. A simple online search for the company name should get you the contact info you need. J.

Hi Art. The path is complete from Kealia to the Lihi Boat Ramp in Kapaa. And the section at Lydgate Beach Park is also complete. They have not yet gotten to Anahola and the section between Lihi Boat Ramp and Lydgate does not yet connect. Still, there is a good chunk of path that is ideal for strolling and biking. You can keep up with the progress at this website:

My wife and I are coming down to Kauai for the first time and are looking for some good mountain biking trails. we have some good mountaing biking expericence from utah mountains and are both in pretty good shape. We are looking for more than a stroll. Anyone have any tips? Also we are looking to hike into a place and camp for the night and then hike out the next day. Any suggestions? I know there is a parking area where you can walk downhill to access the new hike/bike trail a bit north of Kealia. I think it goes through Kealia Kai. There are no landmarks except a little sign. What mile marker is it at, or what else can I use to find it?

Suzanne - that beach is commonly referred to as "Donkeys" and there is a small comfort station about .5 miles after the main Kealia Kai entrance. W

Does the Pedestrian/bike path end at the Northern end of Lydgate Park? If this is the case how may a pedestrian/bike proceed in the direction of Kapaa?

Hi Dan - currently there is no connection between Lydgate and the Kapaa town section of the Kauai Path. You'll have to ride on the road for that section. W

Hi Julie - the Lydgate section of the path begins in the park and goes South towards the Golf Course. The Kapaa / Kealia section begins at a small harbor / river mouth known as the Li?i and proceeds north towards Kealia Kai. Someday the two sections will be connected. W

Can you help me determine the distance between the Kealia beach restrooms and the end of the path, at Donkey Beach? Alternatively, what is the distance from the boat ramp to the Kealia beach bathroom area (north side of beach)? I understand that the total distance is 4.3 miles, but I am interested in knowing at what point in that stretch the Kealia beach bathrooms (north end) are located. Thanks for your help!! A dedicated runner.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to bike from the Coconut Marketplace (where I will be staying) south to Lydgate Park? Lydgate Park is our favorite family destination in all of Hawaii.

Hi Gregg - there is no connecting path from the Coco Mkt to Lydgate. You'll have to ride on the highway. In the future the Kauai Path will connect Lydyate to Kealia. For now, I would suggest checking out the section going North from Kapaa Town.

What a gorgeous bike trail. We had 9 family members ranging from age 21 to 77 and all enjoyed it tremendously. Highly recommend this bike adventure. Easy trail and the scenery is spectacular. Bring water, a picnic, and sunscreen for a glorius hour ride.

Does anyone know when the sea wall construction infront of the Pono Kai resort in Kapaa will start? Heading there in Feb. and hoping the path and view wont be obstructed.

I LOVED this trail. Stayed in a condo at Kaha Lani which was right at end of the path and ended biking the whole thing. I rented bikes from Kauai Coasters and we rode them practically every day.
Here is just one blog post I wrote that talks about this INCREDIBle Path...
http://www.freedom2livelifewell.com/kauais-best-kept-secret-ke-ala-hele-makalae-bike-path/
Highly recommend this!!!
ps. there is a short area where you must go along highway between Longs drugs and Kapaa Shores but me and my 12 year old did just fine. We also went along parking lot through Coconut Marketplace and followed road up to Longs and then highway for short distance there.
Hope it helps anyone reading this.
Aloha
